The third of three hilltop castles on the site, it is located atop Mount Hohenzollern, above and south of Hechingen, on the edge of the Swabian Jura of central Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The first fortress on the mountain was constructed in the early 11th century. The Black Forest National Park was founded on 1 January 2014 and is the first national park in Baden-Württemberg.

The 100.62 km ² large national park lies at the main ridge of the northern black forest predominantly between the Black Forest high road and the valley of the Murg.

It consists of two individual areas approximately 3.5 kilometers apart around Ruhestein (7,615 hectares) and Hoher Ochsenkopf / Plättig (2,447 hectares) and lies within the Black Forest Central / North Nature Park.
