Besançon is the capital of the department of Doubs and the former capital of Franche-Comté, a region in eastern France close to the border with Switzerland. In 2013, Besançon had a population of 116,952.
Once proclaimed the first green city of France, it has been labeled a Town of Art and History since 1986. Since 2008, the Citadel of Besançon has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The city has one of the most beautiful historic centers of any major town in France. A broad horse-shoe of the river Doubs, la Boucle, encircles the old town, while Vauban's imposing Citadelle blocks off the neck. The historic center presents a remarkable ensemble of classic stone buildings, some dating back to the Middle Ages and others to the Spanish Renaissance. Among its most visited historic monuments are: several Roman remains, the 16th-century Palais Granvelle, Vauban's citadel (Citadel of Besançon) (this wil be the subject of one of my next videos), the Cathedral of St. Jean, several Spanish Renaissance-style buildings, the Église de la Madeleine, and the river frontage.

Besançon is a city in eastern France, near the border with Switzerland. The old city center lies in a horseshoe bend on the Doubs River. The sprawling Citadel of Besançon perches on a hill and is home to 3 museums, a zoo and 600m-long ramparts. At the foot of the hill, Besançon Cathedral has a unique 70-­dial astronomical clock that indicates sunrise and sunset, eclipses, and tides in French ports.

Hugging a bouclé (hairpin curve) of the River Doubs, the cultured and very attractive capital of Franche-Comté remains refreshingly modest and untouristy, despite charms such as a monumental Vauban citadel, a graceful 18th-century old town and France’s first public museum. In Gallo-Roman times, Vesontio (over the centuries, the name evolved to become Besançon) was an important stop on the trade routes linking Italy, the Alps and the Rhine, and some striking remains of this period survive.

Besançon (affectionately known as Besac by its inhabitants) is situated in an oxbow bend of the river Doubs (known as la Boucle). The river encircles the old town, while the imposing citadel, built by military engineer Vauban, blocks the neck of the river bend.

The city has a long history, and has been settled since the Bronze Age (ca. 1,500 BC). In Roman times, Besançon was a flourishing provincial town known as Vesontio. Some Roman remains can still be admired in the city centre. In the late Middle Ages, Besançon was a free city state within the Holy Roman Empire. From the 14th to the 17th century, Besançon and the region of Franche-Comté changed hands various times between Burgundy, Spain and France, and were finally joined with France in 1678. From then on, Besançon became an important strategic town for the French, and large fortifications were built to defend it. Besançon has however not played any major role in French history since then, and its location as a relative backwater has left the city centre largely unspoiled.

Dijon is the capital city of the historical Burgundy region in eastern France, one of the country’s principal wine-producing areas. Dijon
is known for its vineyard tours, autumn gastronomic fair and building styles ranging from Gothic to art deco. The distinguished 1787 Musée des Beaux-Arts, housed in the vast Palace of the Dukes, holds a rich collection of paintings, sculptures, crafts and antiquities.

Dijon is a city in eastern France, capital of the Côte-d'Or département and of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. The earliest archaeological finds within the city limits of Dijon date to the Neolithic period. Dijon later became a Roman settlement named Divio, located on the road from Lyon to Paris. The province was home to the Dukes of Burgundy from the early 11th until the late 15th centuries and Dijon was a place of tremendous wealth and power.

Dijon architecture is distinguished by, among other things, toits bourguignons (Burgundian polychrome roofs) made of tiles glazed in terracotta, green, yellow and black and arranged in geometric patterns. Dijon holds an International and Gastronomic Fair every year in autumn. With over 500 exhibitors and 200,000 visitors every year, it is one of the ten most important fairs in France. Dijon is also home, every three years, to the international flower show Florissimo. Dijon is famous for Dijon mustard which originated in 1856, when Jean Naigeon of Dijon substituted verjuice, the acidic green juice of not-quite-ripe grapes, for vinegar in the traditional mustard recipe.

Dijon has a large number of churches, including Notre Dame de Dijon, St. Philibert, St. Michel, and Dijon Cathedral, dedicated to the apocryphal Saint Benignus, the crypt of which is over 1,000 years old. Dijon architecture is distinguished by, among other things, toits bourguignons (Burgundian polychrome roofs) made of tiles glazed in terracotta, green, yellow and black and arranged in geometric patterns.

Dijon is home to many museums, including the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon in part of the Ducal Palace. Among the more popular sights is the Ducal Palace, the Palais des Ducs et des États de Bourgogne or Palace of the Dukes and the States of Burgundy. The church of Notre Dame is famous for both its art and architecture. Popular legend has it that one of its stone relief sculptures, an owl (la chouette) is a good-luck charm

The Grand Théâtre de Dijon, built in 1828 and one of the main performing venues of the Opéra de Dijon, was declared a monument historique of France in 1975. It was designed by the Dijon-born architect Jacques Cellerier (1742–1814) in the Neo-classical style with an interior modelled on Italian opera houses.

Beaune is a walled town at the center of the Burgundy winemaking region in France. Surrounded by the Côte d'Or vineyards, the cobbled town is renowned for an annual wine auction held at the Hôtel-Dieu (Hospices de Beaune). Recognized by its colorful, geometric-patterned tile roof, this 15th-century former hospital is now the Hôtel-Dieu Museum, showcasing works like The Last Judgement altarpiece by Van der Weyden.

Beaune (pronounced similarly to 'bone'), 44km south of Dijon, is the unofficial capital of the Côte d'Or. This thriving town's raison d'être and the source of its joie de vivre is wine: making it, tasting it, selling it, but most of all, drinking it. Consequently Beaune is one of the best places in all of France for wine tasting. The jewel of Beaune's old city is the magnificent Hôtel-Dieu, France's most splendiferous medieval charity hospital.

Beaune is one of the key wine centers in France, and the center of Burgundy wine production and business. The annual wine auction of the Hospices de Beaune is the primary wine auction in France. (The hospice structure, in the town center, being one of the best preserved renaissance buildings in Europe.)

The town is surrounded by some of the world's most famous wine villages, while the facilities and cellars of many producers, large and small, are situated in the historic center of Beaune itself, as they have been since Roman times. With a rich historical and architectural heritage, Beaune is considered the Capital of Burgundy wines. It is an ancient and historic town on a plain by the hills of the Côte d'Or, with features remaining from the pre-Roman and Roman eras, through the medieval and renaissance periods.

Beaune is a walled city, with about half of the battlements, ramparts, and the moat, having survived in good condition. The central old town or vieille ville is extensive. Historically Beaune is intimately connected with the Dukes of Burgundy. Landmarks in Beaune include the old market (les Halles), the 15th-century Hospices, the Beffroi (clock tower), and the collegiate church of Notre Dame. Beaune is the main center for the Burgundian tile polychrome renaissance roofing style of the region.

The name Beaune derives from the Latinised Gaulish word Belena, which was the name of a spring around which the settlement was established. That name in turn is derived from Belen or Belenos, a god of fast-flowing water. A Roman fort was built there in the first century A.D. and it was already a prosperous wine-growing region in the 13th century.

Although Beaune is not primarily a tourist town but one centred on the wine industry, it nevertheless attracts a large amount of tourism. About five traditional smaller hotels are located within the city walls with around five chain hotels on the outskirts. Beaune is one of a number of towns in Europe asserting a key role in the invention of film; a number of murals and other tourist attractions reflect this. Technically Beaune is a commune in eastern France, a sub-prefecture of department 21, the Côte-d'Or department, in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region.
