Braithwaite is an unincorporated community in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, United States. Braithwaite is located on the Mississippi River and Louisiana Highway 39 in northern Plaquemines Parish, 9.6 miles southeast of New Orleans. Braithwaite has a post office with ZIP code 70040, which opened on September 19, 1902. Two of the first deaths in the United States caused by Hurricane Isaac in 2012 occurred in Braithwaite, where a couple drowned in their home on August 30.

1. Whitney Plantation Wallace Louisiana
The Whitney Plantation Historic District is a museum devoted to slavery in the Southern United States. The district, including the main house and outbuildings, is preserved near Wallace, in St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana, on the River Road along the Mississippi River. The plantation was started in 1752 by German immigrants Ambroise Haydel and his wife, and their descendants owned it until 1867.The museum, comprising main portions of the 2,000-acre plantation property, opened its doors to the public for the first time in December 2014. It was founded by John Cummings, a trial attorney from New Orleans who has spent more than $8 million of his own fortune on this long-term project, and worked on it for nearly 15 years. Sophie and I went on a guided 2-hour bus-tour on our second day in New Orleans, where we got to see everything from the French Quarter to downtown to the garden district to music scenes and above ground cemeteries. Here, we spent some time in the Ninth Ward, aka the poorer areas of New Orleans, which were hit the hardest by Hurricane Katrina back in August 2005. The man speaking is Dino, our tour guide, explaining what the symbols on the doors of the houses in this area meant during the rescue efforts.
