Trento is a city in the Trentino–Alto Adige region of northern Italy. It’s known for the Buonconsiglio Castle, home to late-medieval fresco cycles. Trento Cathedral, featuring a rose window and a baroque chapel, sits on Piazza Duomo. Also on the square is Casa Cazuffi-Rella, a Renaissance building with a frescoed facade. Southwest, MUSE is a science and natural history museum with high-tech exhibits.
The capital of Trentino is quietly confident, liberal and easy to like. Bicycles glide along spotless streets fanning out from the atmospheric, intimate Piazza del Duomo, students clink spritzes by Renaissance fountains and a dozen historical eras intermingle seamlessly among stone castles, shady porticoes and the city's signature medieval frescoes. While there's no doubt you're in Italy, Trento does have its share of Austrian influence: apple strudel is ubiquitous and beer halls not uncommon. Trento is a city in the northern regions of Italy that sits on the River Adige and is nestled within the Adige River Valley. As the capital of the Trentino region, the city has a population of 117,000 and is considered to be one of the richest cities of the country. Furthermore, citizens here enjoy a high quality of life and standard of living.
During ancient history, Trento was occupied by the Etruscans, Gauls and Romans. Once the Roman Empire had fallen, the city became part of the Lombard Empire and also came under the rule of the Habsburgs during the Middle Ages. Today, the city has a thriving economy and serves as a main communication hub in Northern Italy.
Due to its extensive history and involvement with various Empires and rulers, Trento has a plethora of beautiful historical structures such as the Duomo and Castello del Buonocnsiglio. Furthermore, the city has a host of fine museums and galleries, and some great shopping opportunities. Alternatively, due to its location in the Northern Alps, Trento lies in close proximity to many high-quality ski resorts for those who are more adventurous.
Located in the heart of the old town of Trento, this Cathedral is the main religious structure in the city and was originally the seat of the Bishop of Trento until 1802. Constructed in the 11th century, this old building has been renovated and remodelled over the years and during the 14th century had a series of stunning Renaissance frescos added to its interior.
Castello del Buonconsiglio stunning castle complex once served as the home of the prince-bishops that ruled over Trento and the surrounding region during the 13th century. Due to its immense age, the castle has several different design elements that have been added at various stages throughout its history.
Leading directly from the Piazza del Duomo, the Via Belenzani is one of the central streets in the old town and features some fine architecture and selection of shops and restaurants. Contained on this street is a selection of historical buildings that are covered with beautiful coloured frescos dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries.
Simply known as the museum of Science, the MUSE complex is a wonderful building and a great attraction for all the family. Located on the banks of the River Adige, this museum can be reached from the Piazza del Duomo on foot in roughly 20 minutes. Sometimes overshadowed by the Duomo, the Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore is nonetheless a beautiful building and worthy of a visit in its own right.
Another fantastic museum in the region surrounding Trento, the Museum of Aeronautics is located at the Trento international airport. To the north west of Trento is the immense Mount Paganella. Trento lies approximately 1 hour from the northern edge of the immense Lake Garda.

Padua, Italy, travel in the Old Town
Padua in northern Italy is one of those great old cities with a beautifully preserved historic center. The pedestrian zone has got arcades and shops, bars and cafés, cobblestone and broad piazzas, and lots of people out having a good time. We say Padua, Italians say Padova. In this episode we are going to focus more on people and the street life rather than historic sites like churches or museums. We will be showing you some great old buildings and suggesting a nice walking route that will get you right around through the historic center of Padua and will take you into the university district. Padua makes a very convenient day trip from nearby Venice, which is just 24 miles away – it's about a half hour train ride. We visit the main piazzas and Via Roma, a wonderful walking street. It really is the main pedestrian lane of Padua, and while it's not a piazza it functions as one because there are no cars allowed, so it's long and narrow as a street but filled with people.
The town has a wonderful historic center with pedestrian lanes and the loggia, with all of these arcades and columns. It's very pedestrian-friendly and bicycle-friendly. People are pedaling all over the place here, and there's lots of cafés, naturally, sidewalk cafés, people eating and drinking in the evening especially the young people, who come out about 6 o'clock to 7 o'clock and have a spritz, or a beer, have a wine at the café.

We found some sort of a street party going on. Turns out they are celebrating graduation day at the Padua medical school. It's the oldest medical school in the world, first founded with the University in the year 1222. And this being Italy they know how to celebrate in the streets. Amazing to think this ritual has been going on annually for about 800 years. And Padua still has one of the best medical schools in the world. The University has been associated with a large number of important intellectuals such as Copernicus, Galileo, Stendhal and William Harvey, who developed his system of blood circulation here. The university medical school has the oldest anatomy lab in the world and the university also hosts the oldest botanical garden in the world, which was used as a garden of curative herbs attached to the medical school. When done with your visit to Padua you can catch the tram right back to the train station.

VENICE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CITY IN THE WORLD: THE GRAND CANAL

The Grand Canal (Italian: Canal Grande, Venetian: Canałasso) is a canal in Venice, Italy. It forms one of the major water-traffic corridors in the city. Public transport is provided by water buses (Italian: vaporetti) and private water taxis, and many tourists explore the canal by gondola.
At one end, the canal leads into the lagoon near the Santa Lucia railway station and the other end leads into Saint Mark Basin; in between, it makes a large reverse-S shape through the central districts (sestieri) of Venice. It is 3,800 m long, 30--90 m wide, with an average depth of five meters (16.5 ft)
The banks of the Grand Canal are lined with more than 170 buildings, most of which date from the 13th to the 18th century, and demonstrate the welfare and art created by the Republic of Venice. The noble Venetian families faced huge expenses to show off their richness in suitable palazzos; this contest reveals the citizens' pride and the deep bond with the lagoon. Amongst the many are the Palazzi Barbaro, Ca' Rezzonico, Ca' d'Oro, Palazzo Dario, Ca' Foscari, Palazzo Barbarigo and to Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, housing the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. The churches along the canal include the basilica of Santa Maria della Salute. Centuries-old traditions, such as the Historical Regatta, are perpetuated every year along the Canal.
Because most of the city's traffic goes along the Canal rather than across it, only one bridge crossed the canal until the 19th century, the Rialto Bridge. There are currently three more bridges, the Ponte degli Scalzi, the Ponte dell'Accademia, and the recent, controversial Ponte della Costituzione, designed by Santiago Calatrava, connecting the train station to Piazzale Roma, one of the few places in Venice where buses and cars can enter. As was usual in the past, people can still take a ferry ride across the canal at several points by standing up on the deck of a simple gondola called a traghetto, although this service is less common than even a decade ago.
Most of the palaces emerge from water without pavement. Consequently, one can only tour past the fronts of the buildings on the grand canal by boat.
The Grand Canal probably follows the course of an ancient river (possibly a branch of the Brenta) flowing into the lagoon. Adriatic Veneti groups already lived beside the formerly-named Rio Businiacus before the Roman age. They lived in stilt houses and on fishing and commerce (mainly salt). Under the rule of the Roman empire and later of the Byzantine empire the lagoon became populated and important, and in the early 9th century the doge moved his seat from Malamocco to the safer Rivoaltus.
Increasing trade followed the doge and found in the deep Grand Canal a safe and ship accessible canal-port. Drainage reveals that the city became more compact over time: at that time the Canal was wider and flowed between small, tide-subjected islands connected by wooden bridges.
A STORY OF HOPE: Conversations in Trentino, Italy
This is a little documentary about the heartwarming experience I had in Trentino, Italy, volunteering in a castle that is over a thousand years old. My friends Sophie, Thea and Ollie run Campo Base, which hosts events for children and adults dealing with serious illnesses. I was invited to volunteer and speak at one of their camps, Camp Ray of Hope, which is an organisation that helps children with haemophilia, cancer and other illnesses in Romania. It is a project of S.T.A.R Children Relief Speaking with the kids, doctors, the founders of the nonprofit organisation and teenagers whose lives have been changed by the incredible empowerment they've found at these camps every year, I felt such deep connections and gratitude that people like this exist. I hope you are touched by these moments too.
