Burgk Castle on the River Saale is a schloss and former castle in the county of Saale-Orla-Kreis in the Thuringian Highlands of Germany which, today, houses a museum that portrays the princely lifestyle of years gone by. From the time of its construction in the Middle Ages to 1945 it belonged to the House of Reuß. The schloss and village of Burgk lie on an exposed site on a rock plateau above the village of Burgkhammer and the eponymous reservoir on a bend in the Saale. It is nine kilometres from the A 9 motorway .

Castle Colditz is a Renaissance castle in the town of Colditz near Leipzig, Dresden and Chemnitz in the state of Saxony in Germany. The castle is between the towns of Hartha and Grimma on a hill spur over the river Zwickauer Mulde, a tributary of the River Elbe. It had the first wildlife park in Germany when, during 1523, the castle park was converted into one of the largest menageries in Europe. The castle gained international fame as the site of Oflag IV-C, a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II for incorrigible Allied officers who had repeatedly escaped from other camps.

Marksburg

Die Marksburg ist eine aus dem 12. Jahrhundert stammende Höhenburg oberhalb der rheinland-pfälzischen Stadt Braubach am Rhein, von der sie ihren ursprünglichen Namen Burg Brubach bezog. Sie steht auf einem Schieferkegel in 160 Meter Höhe und ist die einzige nie zerstörte mittelalterliche Höhenburg am Mittelrhein. Der verputzte Bruchsteinbau entstand zum Schutz und zur Verwaltung Braubachs und diente anfänglich auch als Zollburg.Ursprünglich hieß die Burg nach dem Ort am Fuße des Burgbergs Burg Brubach, in diversen Schreibweisen (Burgk Brubach, Burch Brubach, Burg Brubach). 1437 wird die Burgkapelle Sankt Markus erstmals erwähnt, da Philipp I. der Ältere von Katzenelnbogen der Burg einen Altar stiftete. Im Jahr 1574 wird die Burg zur Unterscheidung von der neuen zweiten Anlage am Rheinufer, der Philippsburg, urkundlich erstmals „Sankt Marxpurgk“ genannt, auch der Name Markusburch wird verwendet. Weitere Namensänderungen finden sich 1581 als Markenburch zu Braubach und 1583 Schloss Marxburg (auch „altes Schloss“ genannt). 1646/55 hieß die Anlage bei Matthäus Merian ebenfalls Marxburg. Die Schreibweise hielt sich bis Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die in diesem Zusammenhang existierende Sage zur Namensgebung „Wie die Marksburg zu ihrem Namen kam“, in welcher der Evangelist Markus als Retter der Burg und ihrer Bewohner auftritt und so zum Namenspatron wird, ist keine gesicherte Realität, vor allem nicht, was die Umbenennung anbetrifft. Um diese Zeit war in Braubach und Umgebung sowie auf der gleichnamigen Burg bereits ein halbes Jahrhundert lang die Reformation eingeführt. Seit 1525 war demnach kein katholischer Burgkaplan mehr dort im Amt.
