Magical Peru #12: Chivay and the La Calera Hot Springs (baños termales)
As we arrive in the small town of Chivay, we head to the local hot springs (baños termales). La Calera thermal pools are located just outside Chivay and are perfect to relax after such a long journey from Arequipa.
When we first arrived in Peru, we spent a couple of weeks studying Spanish in Lima (please watch the vlog Living in Lima) then we headed to the North of Peru and visited Trujillo, Chiclayo and some archaeological sites, such as tombs, piramids and ancient cities. Now we go South: our first stop was in Arequipa, and then we headed to Chivay and its thermal pools (La Calera hot springs) and the Colca Canyon, to do a canyon tour!
Chivay is a town in the Colca valley, capital of the Caylloma province in the Arequipa region, Peru. Located at about 12,000 ft above sea level, it lies upstream of the renowned Colca Canyon. It has a central town square and an active market. The thermal springs La Calera Baños Termales, are located 3 km from town, where a number of heated pools have been constructed. A stone Inca bridge crosses the Colca River ravine, just to the north of the town. The town is a popular staging point for tourists visiting Condor Cross or Cruz Del Condor, where condors can be seen catching thermal uplifts a few kilometres downstream. Most of the Colca Canyon tours depart from Chivay.
Arequipa, founded on the 15th of August, 1540, is the capital and largest city of the province of Arequipa and the seat of the Constitutional Court. Also known as the White City, Arequipa has 845 touthands inhabitants. Arequipa is just below the edge of the Altiplano, at 2380 meters above sea level and surrounded by three impressive volcanoes. It's Peru's second most important city (after Lima), and the second most popular among tourists (after Cuzco). The city is part of the so called Southern Peru Tourist Corridor, together with Nazca, Puno and Cusco. In contrast to these other cities, Arequipa is an example of the Spanish and mestizo culture developed in Peru. There are no Inca artifacts or ruins in the city as the Arequipa was a suporter of Spanish colonization.
On the next video we will depart from Chivay on our micro bus, passing by Yanque town and doing the Colca Canyon tour, in search of the mighty Condor!

Colca Canyon Travel Guide - Arequipa Tourist Attractions
The #ColcaCanyon starts125 miles or 200 km and five hours by bus from Arequipa, Peru´s second largest city.
Its a draw card for visitors for its unique beauty and for its preservation of a distinct Andean culture.
Its also one of the deepest canyons in the world.
Pre-Inca terraces climb up the steep #canyon walls, enormous cactus farms support the cochineal insect, used to made red dyes, and indigenous women show off their colorful dresses and beautifully embroidered hats at stalls and markets along the ridgeline.
Treks can also be made into the depths of the Canyon, with zigzagging paths linking small isolated towns that cling to the hillsides, and following the #mountain rivers that converge on an oasis at the base of the gorge. The canyon is also famous for the giant condors that soar overhead from their perches hidden in the cliff face.

Magical Peru #14: Cruz del Condor
Magical Peru: youtube.com/diogok
We woke up very early in Chivay to hop on a bus and go on a day tour on the Colca Canyon, passing by small villages like the Yanque town and Maca pueblo, taking photos with llamas and Andine Eagle (águila andina), and reaching the Condor Cross (Cruz del Condor), at a altitude of well over four thousand meters! For the first part of this trip on the Colca Canyon, please watch the previous video:
The Colca Canyon is home to the Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus), a species that has been the focus of worldwide conservation efforts. The condors can be seen at close range as they fly past the canyon walls, and are a popular attraction. 'Cruz del Condor' is a popular tourist stop to view the condors. At this point the canyon floor is 3,960 feet (1,200 m) below the rim of the canyon.
Colca Canyon is a canyon of the Colca River in southern Peru, located about 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of Arequipa. It is Peru's third most-visited tourist destination with about 120,000 visitors annually. It is more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the United States at 13,650 ft (4,160 m) depth. The Colca Valley is a colorful Andean valley with pre-Inca roots, and towns founded in Spanish colonial times, still inhabited by people of the Collagua and the Cabana cultures. The local people maintain their ancestral traditions and continue to cultivate the pre-Inca stepped terraces.

Pre-Inca Tombs In Colca Canyon, Peru
Visit to check out great information about mysterious and fantastic places on earth.
These are the Pre - Inca tombs found at a mountain in Colca Canyon. The remains are not similar to Inca, so archaeologists think that these are Pre - Inca tomb sites.

Colca Canyon - Peru Reisevideo
Web:
