City Walk in Granada, Andalusia - Spain 4K Travel Channel
Our Granada city walk starts at the confluence of Rio Darro and Rio Genil and continues through the magnificent Avenue Carrera de la Virgen. We quickly recognize one of the heritages that the Moors had left to the Spaniards; The preference for water as a part of the architecture. Everywhere, you can find magnificent fountains and can watch the game of water and light. The desired side effect in this hot area is the slight cooling through the evaporation of the water .
Particularly the Plaza del Campillo invites to stay a little bit longer. Therefore, it is not surprising that many people use this place to relax. Just behind lies the Realejo district, one of the old quarters of Granada.
Through the Calle del Darro Acerra we reach the Calle Reyes Catolicos, a major shopping mile in Granada. In the summer months, the relatively narrow street is covered with linen tarpaulins to provide shade.
We have seen this also in other Spanish cities, e.g. in Toledo. Another peculiarity in Granada is the great number of hybrid cars. In the city, they usually drive with electricity. This has an important influence on the air quality in such a busy city. Other countries should immediately take it as an example!
The tourism board and the city council is at the Plaza del Carmen. Next, we pass the Plaza Isabel la Catolica and Plaza Nueva.
Worth seeing is the building of the former Supreme Court of Andalusia the Real Chancillería de Granada. This is the place where the Rio Darro disappears to the underground before it flows into the Rio Genil. The valley of the Darro is very distinctive by its stone bridges and allows a beautiful view of the Alhambra. During a short break for breakfast, we observe some tourists with their Segways.
Infected by the convenience, we take a taxi to the Iglesia de San Nicolás. From the Mirador San Nicolás, a wonderful viewpoint, one has the best view of the Alhambra. We admire the Alhambra in its entire dimension as well as the original Arabian quarter.

Places to see in ( Madrid - Spain ) El Rastro
Places to see in ( Madrid - Spain ) El Rastro
El Rastro de Madrid or simply el Rastro is the most popular open air flea market in Madrid. It is held every Sunday and public holiday during the year and is located along Plaza de Cascorro and Ribera de Curtidores, between Calle Embajadores and the Ronda de Toledo (just south of La Latina metro station). A great variety of products (new and used) can be found at el Rastro. A number of antique shops in the local area are also open on Sunday.
El Rastro means the trail. The market probably owes its name to the tanneries that were once located in Ribera de Curtidores (Ribera de Curtidores means 'riverside of tanners'). Close by, on the banks of the Manzanares River, was an abattoir. Transporting the slaughtered cattle from the abattoir to the tannery left a trail (rastro) of blood along the street. An alternative etymology suggests el Rastro once meant outside, referring to the fact el Rastro was once outside the jurisdiction of the mayor's court.
According to municipal rules, el Rastro takes place every Sunday and public holiday of the year, from 9 am to 3 pm, in the barrio de Embajadores ('Ambassador's neighborhood) in the Central District of Madrid. The Madrid town council regulates the markets. A maximum of 3500 stalls cover the area from the Plaza de Cascorro, with its statue dedicated to Eloy Gonzalo, who was a Spanish soldier who fought in the Cuban War of Independence in which he distinguished himself and is regarded as a hero, in the north, along the main thoroughfare of Ribera de Curtidores and adjoining streets to Calle Embajadores in the east and the Ronda de Toledo and Plaza del Campillo del Mundo Nuevo in the south.
According to the German writer Hans Magnus Enzensberger, el Rastro is the final border between Europe and Africa, comprising diverse peoples from different countries and of differing ethnicities all searching for curiosities or bargains, sightseeing, sampling the gastronomic delights of Madrid or simply soaking up the atmosphere. Traditionally, the wares for sale are items not available in shops or malls, such as antiques, rarities, curiosities.
El Rastro's promotional page advises those wanting a tourist experience to go to el Rastro at 11am, as this when the market is busiest. Those wishing to haggle for a bargain in the stalls should be at the market a little earlier, between 9 and 10am. The crowds usually begin to thin around midday, as people head for the bars at the edges of the market and around La Plaza de Cascorro for a drink and some tapas. The stalls gradually shut and by 3 or 4 pm (depending if it is winter or summer).
