STRESA. The Best Place to go in ITALY. (Lake District)
We spend an afternoon exploring the islands of Stresa! Situated in Northern Italy, Stresa is on Lake Maggiore and surrounded by the Alps! Stresa has a few different islands and we visited two of them.
We started on Isola dei Pescatori (Fisherman’s Island) where we had a pizza lunch and then explore the small streets. We also flew our drone to get some great overhead footage of the island.
We then made our way over to Isola Bella to spend some time in the palace and the amazing gardens, which are supposed to be one of the best examples of Italian gardens in all of Italy. While there we encountered white peacocks for the first time.

Internationally recognised as the jewel of Lake Maggiore, Stresa is one of the most exclusive tourist destinations on Lake Maggiore. In addition to millions of tourists, the Borromean Islands also enchanted Stendhal, Liszt, and Mendelssohn. Dumas recalled them in “The Count of Montecristo”, Turner and Corot represented them in oil paintings and watercolours, D’Annunzio even tried to rent one. Just across from the town of Stresa (in Italy), the archipelago is easily accessible in just few hours by ferryboat from Locarno or Ascona. It consists of three islands: Isola Bella with its grandiose mansion and terraced gardens, Isola Madre with its luxurious English park, and Isola dei Pescatori, a picturesque fishing village boasting an ancient atmosphere.
Isola dei Pescatori (Fisherman’s Island): It is the smallest and quaintest of the three islands, and the only one with permanent residents. The restaurants on the island offer menus based on the typical cuisine of the lake.
Isola Bella (Beatiful Island): dominated by its magnificent Baroque palazzo, which is accompanied by a luxuriant Italian-style garden laid out over ten terraces, 37 meters high. The garden displays exotic plants of great rarity and many strikingly lovely flowers, alongside statues, fountains and the Unicorn, depicted in the coat-of-arms of the aristocratic Borromeo family. There are also beautiful white peacocks, free to roam the gardens, which with their regal bearing contribute to giving Isola Bella the flavour of past times.

This lovely lakeside town on Lago Maggiore is called the garden on the lake. It has a spectacular botanical garden that covers 16 hectares and has 20,000 species of plants from around the world. there is also a lakefront public park, a museum dedicated to landscapes, and a national park at the town's doorstep. Add to that the hanging gardens on the Borromean islands, and you can see why it gets its name.
Located only 91 kilometers from Milan and 40 kilometers from Locarno, Switzerland, Verbania also takes in the hamlets of Pallanza and Intra as part of its municipality. The views of the surrounding Alps across the water are breathtaking, and the town is well-tended. There are opulent villas, museums and water activities to enjoy, as well as horse riding and hiking in the surrounding mountains.
Ferries from Verbania take you to the enchanting little islands known as the Borromean Islands, and across the lake to Laveno. Verbania sits on a promontory point that juts out into the lake, giving it great views up and down the lago. Hire a boat to take you to Stresa across the point to the south, or walk along the shoreline to the neighboring towns. Some of Lake Maggiore's best beaches are in this area, here in Verbania and Ghiffa. The town has sharp cafes, nice restaurants and a laid-back yet affluent-feeling atmosphere. It's a relaxing spot with gorgeous panoramas and outdoors activities aplenty.
A trip to the island of Isola Bella is a must, with its incredible palace and gardens, like a fairy-tale spot on the lake. The old-world fishing island of Isola Pescatori (appropriately named Fishermen's Island) is a quaint place to have a seafood lunch. Villa Remigio is an eclectic but pretty villa built as a lover's hideaway in the 1800s. Villa Giulia is a neoclassic beauty with manicured gardens full of greenery, quiet corners and nice views. It is a park and the villa itself is an upscale restaurant that hosts events and ceremonies.
Villa Taranto was built by a Scottish captain who installed an elaborate English garden, important thousands of species to create a magical place of blooms and tranquility. There is a museum dedicated to landscapes, the Museo del Paessaggio, that is worth a look. But the landscapes themselves will captivate you, from the lake itself to the heights of Mt. Rosso. Looming higher is Monte Zeda to the north in the national park, reaching a peak of 2156 meters above sea level. Despite the lofty elevations, the lakes keep the climate temperate.
Don't miss the Renaissance church of the Madonna di Campagna, the Romanesque Oratorio of San Remigio with 11th century frescoes and a pretty portico; and the museum in Palazzo Dugnani that has Roman era tablets and Lombard frescoes. The Diocesan Museum in Palazzo Biumi-Innocenti shows off religious folk art and devotional votives. The Casa della Resistenza pays homage to the partisans who played a part and paid dearly while resisting fascism during WWII.

Locarno is a small city in Switzerland, located on the northern shores of Lago Maggiore (or Lake Maggiore). It lies in the Italian speaking Canton of Ticino. It won't wrong to say that Locarno is a little Italy in Switzerland - a Swiss city with Italian ambience. Often known for sunny and relatively warmer climate, it is very close to the foot of the Alps. Palm and lemon trees line the city's beautiful promenade. The promenade or the lake-front just adds to its mediterranean look.
The city has a charming Old Town with lot of history. The castle of Visconteo, which is at the edge of the Old Town, is one of the masterpieces designed by non other than renaissance genius - Leonardo da Vinci. Castle of Visconteo gives Switzerland its own da Vinci relic.
Not so far from the city center is the holy mountain of Madonna del Sasso. It is considered as one of the most popular pilgrimages in the region. Popular folklore says that Virgin Mary appeared on this site in 15th Century. Walking up to the hill spot is considered auspicious, although the monastery can as well be reached by a classical funicular train.
Plan a weekend trip to Locarno, it offers something to every visitor. Definitely it is one of the must see places in Switzerland. Enjoy!
