The canton of Bern or Berne is the second largest of the 26 Swiss cantons by both surface area and population. Located in west-central Switzerland, it borders the canton of Jura and the canton of Solothurn to the north. To the west lie the canton of Neuchâtel, the canton of Fribourg and canton of Vaud. To the south lies the canton of Valais. East of the canton of Bern lie the cantons of Uri, Nidwalden, Obwalden, Lucerne and Aargau. The canton of Bern is bilingual and has a population of 1,031,126. As of 2007, the population included 119,930 foreigners. The cantonal capital, also the federal city of Switzerland, is Bern.

  • 1. Einstein House (Einsteinhaus) Bern
    The Einsteinhaus is a museum and a former residence. It is located on Kramgasse No. 49 in Bern, Switzerland. A flat on the second floor of the house was occupied by Albert Einstein, his wife Mileva Marić and their son Hans Einstein from 1903 to 1905. The Annus Mirabilis papers, which contributed substantially to the foundation of quantum physics, were written here while he worked at the Federal Institute of Intellectual Property. The living conditions of Einstein and his family are shown accurately in the apartment on the second floor with furniture from that time. Einstein’s biography and his life’s work are presented on the third floor. A smaller permanent exhibition is located at the Historical Museum of Bern.
