The canton of Bern or Berne is the second largest of the 26 Swiss cantons by both surface area and population. Located in west-central Switzerland, it borders the canton of Jura and the canton of Solothurn to the north. To the west lie the canton of Neuchâtel, the canton of Fribourg and canton of Vaud. To the south lies the canton of Valais. East of the canton of Bern lie the cantons of Uri, Nidwalden, Obwalden, Lucerne and Aargau. The canton of Bern is bilingual and has a population of 1,031,126. As of 2007, the population included 119,930 foreigners. The cantonal capital, also the federal city of Switzerland, is Bern.

1. Harderkulm Interlaken
The Harderkulm is a viewpoint at 1,321 metres in the Berner Oberland region of Switzerland, overlooking the towns of Interlaken and Unterseen. It is located at the western end of the Harder, which in itself is the most western, forested ridge of the about 30 kilometres long, prominent mountain range dominating the north shore of the Lake of Brienz. The viewpoint belongs to the municipality of Unterseen in the canton of Bern with the slopes shared between the municipalities of Unterseen and Interlaken. The Männlichen is a 2,343-metre mountain in the Swiss Alps located within the Canton of Berne. It can be reached from Wengen by the Wengen–Männlichen aerial cableway, or from Grindelwald using the Grindelwald–Männlichen gondola cableway . It then takes 15 minutes to walk to the summit. It is a popular viewpoint over the Lauterbrunnen valley and a popular start location for hikers and skiers.

The Schwarzhorn is a mountain of the Bernese Alps, located between Brienz and Grindelwald in the Bernese Oberland. With a height of 2,928 metres above sea level, it is the highest summit of the group north of the Grosse Scheidegg Pass. The Schwarzhorn is also the highest point in the municipality of Brienz. A small glacier named Blau Gletscherli lies on the north side of the mountain. The Schwarzhorn is regarded as one of the most stunning look-out peaks in the Bernese Oberland. The Niederhorn is a peak of the Emmental Alps in the Bernese Oberland near Beatenberg. It is the peak farthest west in the Güggis ridge. These are my 18 hidden secrets, things to do & best places to visit for Bern, the capital of Switzerland. Bern is not the first place you think of when planning a trip to Europe but let me tell you, Bern is one of the most beautiful places I've been to.

My Bern Travel guide with tips, secrets, maps, addresses and photos:

Kick off Bern with a refreshing jump in the Aare river which flows at speeds up to 13 km per hour while you hold onto your airbag containing your clothes.

For lunch I recommend grabbing a bite at a patio on the Barenplatz downtown Bern loaded with adorable little restaurants and bars.

Kramgasse is the main shopping street with a gorgeous view on the Zytglogge clocktower, the photos simply don't do this place justice.

Bern is well known for being the residence of Professor Einstein, you can visit his original apartment on the Kramgasse. This is also the same place where Einstein came up with the formula E=MC2.

For a fun evening grab a couple of beers at Antonio's Bar & Cafe next to the Zytglogge. I ended up playing a fun game called Corridor with some of the locals and met a couple of friendly girls from Zurich.

In conclusion, Bern is a great summer destination for a pit-stop during a road trip through the Swiss Alps. Due to its small size, 2 days is sufficient to see the entire city. Happy travels!

Bern is the fourth most populous city in Switzerland. The Bern agglomeration, which includes 36 municipalities, has a population of 328,616 in 2000. The metropolitan area had a population of 660,000 in 2000. Bern is also the capital of the Canton of Bern, the second most populous of Switzerland's cantons.

Gelmerbahn: The Highest Roller Coaster in the World

The Gelmerbahn in the canton of Bern is the steepest funicular in Switzerland and Europe.
The video starts with normal speed and then accelerates continuously up to 100 times to give a roller coaster feeling. The real thing is more impressive, although the cable car descents very slowly.
