A spectacular natural sculpture that seems to indicate with the head the sea. Opposite the Maddalena archipelago , over 120 meters high, stands the Roccia dell'Orso, which 'watches over the nearby town of Palau , just over five kilometers away. The rock has given its name to the promontory on which it stands and is easily reachable from the asphalt road through a pedestrian path in good condition along 500 meters.
The Bear of Palau is one of the major attractions among the natural monuments of the island, not surprisingly, its promontory is a destination for thousands of excursions. The granite rock, sculpted over the centuries by atmospheric agents, is particularly exposed to winds and is altered, almost dug, on the surface, characterized by a yellow-pink color. In the surrounding area, due to its high landscape and geological value, a conservation area has been established with the archipelago national park .
The natural monument has been known since ancient times, as attested by the Greek geographer Ptolemy (2nd century AD): it tells of the fear that inspired the sailors because they were able to attract ships with the strength of a great magnet. The ancient sailors saw the shape of a bear (hence the name) and they mentioned it in portolans as a point of recognition, because it is clearly visible from the sea.
The territory of Capo d'Orso is also interesting from the archaeological point of view for the presence of some tombs in tafone and a lithic industry of the Neolithic period. In the stretch of sea in front of it were found many wrecks of ships of various ages, confirming an intense commercial traffic along the north-eastern coast of Sardinia. Near Spargi , a Roman ship was found with the entire load, now rebuilt and kept in the naval museum Nino Lamboglia della Maddalena.

During our Sardinia vacation we had to see the most famous rock formation from Sardegna. So we visited Capo d'Orso to see Roccia dell'Orso. A rock that looks a bit like a giant bear.
You have to pay for parking and there is a entrance fee. From the parking it's a five minute walk. Very beautiful viewpoints. Some parts are forbidden for visitors.
When you are in Sardinia you sure have to see this.
