La Macarena, Caño Cristales, Colombia - 4K UHD - Virtual Trip
The small village of Macarena, located in the department of Meta, is the starting point to visit the famous river Caño Cristales. This village, which has its own landing strip, is about 250km south of Bogota. It can be reached by plane from the capital and the cities of Medellin, Cali or Villavicencio.
Originally inhabited by the indigenous Guayaberos, the Serranía de la Macarena was occupied by Colombians from Caquetá in the 1950s, a region further south. The latter founded El Refugio, which later became La Macarena. The village and all its area was then occupied by the FARCS. With the gradual departure of the guerrillas, the inhabitants have gradually found a normal life and today the Macarena is booming thanks to ecotourism. The municipality of Macarena, which includes the village and all the fincas around, has about 4000 inhabitants.
