Lacken: Ireland Day 2

This is Day 2 of our Republic of Ireland Vacation!

We couchsurfed over in Blessington, Ireland (in County Wicklow) and woke up ready to hike the hills of Lacken around Liffey lake. It's on these hills that P.S. I Love You and Braveheart was filmed. They also currently use this area to film Vikings!

In the spring and summer these hills are covered in purple, but since it's March we saw them in rolls of golds, deep reds, and browns.

We hiked two of the rolling hills surrounding the lake and got an amazing 360 degree view from the top of the second one! On top of each we discovered a pile of rocks. Later investigation lead me to find that this is known as a Cairn (a man-made pile of rocks). It comes from Scottish Gaelic and traditionally is made by carrying the rock from the bottom of the hill up with you before adding it to the pile. In some cases they are also grave markers, but not these. This is a practice now done throughout the world by hikers to show people have been there before you.

Joe was surprised that in Ireland (like Scotland and England) there are no wolves or bear. Ireland (like the U.K.) made their predator species go locally extinct long ago and are now in talks about trying to rewild or reintroduce these species. It would be highly beneficial to the ecosystem like it was for Yellowstone National Park in the United States. If you haven't researched that I suggest looking into it as it's very interesting!

Driving The Ring of Kerry! WAW Ep. 2 (Ireland Vanlife: Driving and Droning on the Ring of Kerry!)

In Wild Atlantic Wanderings Ep. 2, Mark and Evan wake up in the camper van to a glorious Irish sunrise right on the Ring of Kerry and spend the rest of the video discovering the stunning scenery this iconic route has to offer for themselves!

The whole day was spent taking our time enjoying all that this spectacular piece of Irish coastline has to offer, we even have a great view of the Skelligs as the weather clears a bit throughout the day. Our drone really came into its own on this incredible ring road and we are super excited to share some of the stunning scenery with you!
