Los pueblos del Valle del Silencio en el Bierzo, León (cerca de Ponferrada y de las Médulas), son muy bonitos y tienen un encanto especial. De hecho, alguno de ellos está en la lista de los pueblos más bonitos de España.
Nosotros hicimos una ruta en furgoneta camper por el Valle del Silencio, que pasaba por varios de sus pueblos: Valdefrancos, San Clemente de Valdueza, Montes de Valdueza (con su monasterio), y Peñalba de Santiago.
Fue un fin de semana que pasamos en León , visitando las médulas, Ponferrada, y el valle.
Mi recomendación es ir con una furgoneta pequeña, ya que una grande o una autocaravana puede tener dificultades en las carreteras estrechas, sobretodo subiendo al monasterio de Valdueza.

Traditionally the Camino de Invierno (Winter Way) was the route taken by pilgrims to Santiago in the Winter time to avoid the snowy months in the mountains of O Cebreiro, on the Camino Frances. Pilgrims would head south of Ponferrada and follow the meandering River Sil into Galicia. This is a truly spectacular Camino route, full of history and breathtaking landscapes; perfect for those looking for a challenge and an off-the-beaten track Camino experience. Despite its name, this off the beaten track route is best discovered in Spring, when green lush vines create wonderful vistas or in Autumn to make the most of the magical red and ochre colours of the forests and vineyards.
The Camino de Invierno takes pilgrims to the unique landscapes of Las Médulas; a UNESCO-listed site shaped by gold-mining in Roman times; and once in Galicia, pilgrims walk in the heart of the superb Ribeira Sacra, the valley of the Sil River. This relatively undiscovered region is famous for its impressive river canyons, terraced vineyards and rich Romanesque heritage.
The route has been marked with the Camino arrows and shells by the local Camino association. Once in Santiago de Compostela, you should request your Compostela pilgrim certificate to complete this unforgettable trip.

Las Médulas - Spain, November 2018
Las Médulas is a historic gold-mining site near the town of Ponferrada in the comarca of El Bierzo (province of León, Castile and León, Spain). It was the most important gold mine, as well as the largest open-pit gold mine, in the entire Roman Empire. Las Médulas Cultural Landscape is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Las Médulas, Carucedo, Northwest of Spain - The place that used to be the largest gold mine of the Roman Empire, now invaded by forests of Sweet Chestnut.
The spectacular landscape of Las Médulas resulted from the Ruina Montium, a Roman mining technique described by Pliny the Elder in 77 AD consisted of undermining the mountain with large quantities of water supplied by at least seven long aqueducts tapping the rivers in the nearby mountains. The same aqueducts were used to wash the extensive gold deposits, a precursor of Californian hydraulic mining. The area Hispania Tarraconensis had been invaded in 25 BC by the emperor Augustus, so the mining was initiated some time after the region had been subdued.
Las Médulas is a World Heritage Site since 1997.
