Rocca Calascio is a mountaintop fortress or rocca in the Province of L'Aquila in Abruzzo, Italy. At an elevation of 1,460 metres , Rocca Calascio is the highest fortress in the Apennines. Built of stone and masonry exclusively for military purposes and intended only to accommodate troops and never as residence for nobles, the fortress overlooks the Plain of Navelli at one of the highest points in the ancient Barony of Carapelle. Construction of the fortress started in the tenth century as a single watchtower. A walled courtyard with four cylindrical towers at the corners around a taller inner tower was added in the thirteenth century. Nelle aree interne dell’Alto Molise, caratterizzate da importanti fenomeni di spopolamento e significativa presenza di terreni incolti, la piccola comunità di Castel del Giudice (IS), grazie ad una iniziativa di azionariato popolare pubblico-privato, ha costituito nel 2003 la società agricola Melise con l’obiettivo di recuperare i terreni incolti ed abbandonati destinandoli alla produzione specializzata di mele biologiche. Nel Comune sono state avviate anche altre importanti iniziative tra cui la realizzazione dell'albergo diffuso a Borgo Tufi e la residenza Protetta per Anziani.
