Monteriggioni is a comune in the province of Siena in the Italian region Tuscany. It borders on the communes of Casole d'Elsa, Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Colle di Val d'Elsa, Poggibonsi, Siena and Sovicille.[2] The town is architecturally and culturally significant; it hosts several piazzas, and is referenced in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, as well as a playable locale in Ubisoft's video game installments Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.
Monteriggioni is a medieval walled town, located on a natural hillock, built by the Sienese in 1214–19 as a front line in their wars against Florence,[3] by assuming command of the Via Cassia running through the Val d'Elsa and Val Staggia to the west.

During the conflicts between Siena and Florence in the Middle Ages, the city was strategically placed as a defensive fortification. It also withstood many attacks from both the Florentines and the forces of the Bishop of Volterra. In 1554 the Sienese were able to place control of the town's garrison to Giovannino Zeti, who had been exiled from Florence. In 1554, in an act of reconciliation with the Medicis, Zeti simply handed the keys of the town over to the Medicean forces - considered a great betrayal by the town's people. From Wikipedia

SOVANA - Il Borgo e la Necropoli etrusca - Tuscany - HD

Nella Toscana del sud, in provincia di Grosseto, si trova Sovana, suggestivo borgo dall’atmosfera ferma nel tempo, rappresenta un raro gioiello di urbanistica medievale.
Dal 7° al 3° secolo avanti Cristo fu un fiorente centro etrusco; di questo periodo è la importante Necropoli Etrusca con la sua tomba “regina” chiamata Tomba Ildebranda a forma di tempio greco. Fu poi importante città in epoca romana, tanto è vero che nei primi secoli del Cristianesimo divenne sede vescovile.

Fu conquistata dai Longobardi (594), e divenne dominio degli Aldobrandeschi il cui Ducato arrivò a comprendere l’intera provincia di Grosseto. Passata poi alla Famiglia Orsini per successione ereditaria fu saccheggiata e devastata dai Senesi nel 1410.

Rimasta in una situazione di grande abbandono per secoli, ha avuto la fortuna di poter arrivare intatta fino ai giorni nostri nella sua veste medioevale.
Dalla Rocca Aldobrandesca, percorrendo un selciato in cotto, si arriva fino alla Cattedrale dei SS. Pietro e Paolo, e racchiusa così tra i simboli dei poteri che l’hanno governata, Sovana conserva ancora il suo antico incanto e splendore. Nella Piazza del Pretorio si può ammirare il Palazzo Pretorio, la Loggia del Capitano, il Palazzo dell’Archivio, nonché la Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore e il seicentesco Palazzo Bourbon del Monte, in parte addossato all’antica Chiesa di San Mamiliano e, proseguendo per via del Duomo

Caratteristica della zona collinare erano e sono le Vie Cave, strade di breve lunghezza ma interamente e profondamente scavate nel tufo, un tempo erano usate come vie di comunicazione tra i piccoli insediamenti e spesso nelle loro vicinanze venivano collocate le necropoli; oggi regalano ai visitatori straordinari ambienti d’incontaminata ricchezza naturalistica.
