6. Rocca CalascioCalascio Rocca Calascio is a mountaintop fortress or rocca in the Province of L'Aquila in Abruzzo, Italy. At an elevation of 1,460 metres , Rocca Calascio is the highest fortress in the Apennines. Built of stone and masonry exclusively for military purposes and intended only to accommodate troops and never as residence for nobles, the fortress overlooks the Plain of Navelli at one of the highest points in the ancient Barony of Carapelle. Construction of the fortress started in the tenth century as a single watchtower. A walled courtyard with four cylindrical towers at the corners around a taller inner tower was added in the thirteenth century. Castelvecchio Calvisio (l'Aquila) è un borgo di origini molto antiche che si trova all'interno del Parco Nazionale del GranSasso e dei Monti della Laga ad una quota di 1045 mt). Una cinta di mura difende l'altico borgo con case addossate le une alle altre, vicoli stretti e caratteristiche, innumerevoli, scale in petra esterne alle abitazioni che consentono si salire ai piani superiori. Un atmostfera di pace e tranquillità, venata da una sottile malinconia, pervade il luogo e lascia immaginare la dura esistenza condotta in passato durante gli aspri inverni d'Abruzzo. Il borgo che, ha subito notevoli danni dall'ultimo terremoto, è attualmente abitato e accudito amorevolmente da meno di 200 persone.
