Corniglio is a comune in the Province of Parma in the Italian region Emilia-Romagna, located about 100 kilometres west of Bologna and about 40 kilometres southwest of Parma. Corniglio borders the following municipalities: Bagnone, Berceto, Calestano, Filattiera, Langhirano, Monchio delle Corti, Palanzano, Pontremoli, Tizzano Val Parma. It is home to a castle, known since 1240. It was built in sandstone by the Rossi family, who held it until the 16th century.

Torrechiara is a frazione of the comune of Langhirano, in the province of Parma, northern Italy. It is especially known for its massive castle, built by Pier Maria II de' Rossi , count of San Secondo, between 1448 and 1460. The building was thought not only as a defensive structure, but also as mansion for the count's lover, Bianca Pellegrini, for which a famous hall, the Camera d'Oro was built with decorations by Benedetto Bembo, sibling of Bonifacio Bembo. Scenes of the 1985 film Ladyhawke were shot at the castle.

The Rocca Sanvitale, or Sanvitale Castle, is a fortress residence in the centre of the town of Fontanellato, near Parma, northern Italy. Construction of the moated block, accessible through a drawbridge, was begun in the 13th century, mostly completed by the 15th century, with embellishments continuing through to the 18th century. It is prototypical of the urban castle-houses of the turbulent medieval communes of Northern Italy. Until the 1930s it was the home of the descendants of the Count of Sanvitale. The crenelated walls and asymmetric towers are surrounded by an arcaded town. Adjacent to the castle are gardens and a courtyard. Corniglia, is unique among the five because it's up on the hill with no direct access to the water, so there is no boat service here. The hiking trail takes about 90 minutes, or you can arrive by train in 5 minutes. Either way this little speck of a town is worth seeing because it is the smallest and most isolated, and perhaps the oldest. Yes, there are going to be more stairs -- but just a little bit of climbing will get you around.

Cinque Terre - shortly from Italy

What a magnificient holiday trip to Italy! Wonders in the nature and small colourful villages of Cinque Terre was unforgettable.

Villages Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore are forth to see and feel. Access on area is difficult but it is the best guarantee to save those unique villages.

L'arte e la cultura, i muretti a secco, la natura, le spiagge, la cucina... Ahhh :)

Italy- Cinque Terre 1

In May, 2008 after an absolutely delightful stay in Venice we rode trains across Italy to the Northwest coast to visit the 5 quaint coastal villages known as Cinque Terre. We were pleased that the Italian trains were always on time, clean & comfortable, and an inexpensive mode of travel. We chose to stay in the southernmost village (Riomaggiore) and to visit the other 4 villages by hiking and/or riding the train. The distance between the towns from one end to the other is only 8 miles. Walking through all requires some steep climbs between the two Northern towns but the rest of the trail does not. Beautiful scenery!
