Its capital Zagreb forms one of the country's primary subdivisions, along with twenty counties. Croatia has an area of 56,594 square kilometres and a population of 4.28 million, most of whom are Roman Catholics. The Croats arrived in the area in the 6th century and organised the territory into two duchies by the 9th century.   • 1. Marjan Split
    Marjan is a hill on the peninsula of the city of Split, the second largest city of Croatia. It is covered in a dense Mediterranean pine forest and completely surrounded by the city and the sea, making it a unique sight. Originally used as a park by the citizens as early as the 3rd century, it is a favorite weekend excursion destination and a recreational center for the city. It is also the setting for numerous beaches and jogging trails as well as tennis courts and the city Zoo, all surrounded by the scenic forest. The tip of the peninsula houses the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries . Marjan is 178 m tall and offers a view of the entire city, the surrounding islands, and the nearby mountains of Mosor and Kozjak. Beaches Kašjuni and Bene are located at the foot of Marjan hill.

    Biokovo is the second-highest mountain range in Croatia, located along the Dalmatian coast of the Adriatic Sea, between the rivers of Cetina and Neretva. It is sometimes referred to as Bijakova, especially among inhabitants of the eastern side of the mountain. Its highest peak is Sveti Jure , at 1762 m.a.s.l. It shows a typical karst landscape. Atop the peak there is a powerful FM and DVB-T transmitter.     Medvednica is a mountain in central Croatia, just north of Zagreb, and marking the southern border of the historic region of Zagorje. The highest peak, at 1,035 m is Sljeme. Most of the area of Medvednica is a nature park , a type of preservation lesser than a national park. The area of the park is 228.26 km2 and about 63% is covered with forest. During Miocene and Pliocene, the mountain was an island within the Pannonian Sea.

    Mosor , or Mount Mosor , is a mountain range in Croatia located near the city of Split on the Adriatic coast. It belongs to Dinaric Alps, and it stretches from the pass of Klis in the northwest to the Cetina River in the southeast. The highest peak is the eponymous Mosor peak at 1,339 m.a.s.l. There are no inhabited areas on the mountain above 600 metres. Mosor is mainly composed of karst — limestone rocks. It attracts mountaineers from Croatia. There are two alpine huts and many mountaineering paths on Mosor.
