Cohunu Koala Park is a wildlife sanctuary on 14 ha of bushland at Byford, near Perth, Western Australia.It features not only koalas, but also dingoes, kangaroos, emus, wallabies, eagles, wombats, echidnas, black swans, cockatoos, and lifelike replicas of dinosaurs.The park was established by the Sorbello family as Cohuna Wildlife Park at the former East Martin site in 1972-1973 . The park's koala colony was established in 1982 at Mills Park Road in Gosnells, with four koalas from South Australia. In 2005, the park was moved to Nettleton Road, Byford. Its koala colony now has over 25 koalas.Between 10 am and 4 pm daily, visitors to the park may be photographed cuddling a koala, at an additional charge. With very little notice I contacted the boys in the small town of Cunderdin for a tour of the factory and they were only to happy to let me and my camera poke around to see how this small Aussie company exports to the world.

I'm old fashioned, a bushman and solo Overlander, exploring the Pilbara where I live and Australia as a whole. Tammin - Western Australia

Yet another of the many wheat belt towns, Tammin is named after the tammar wallaby (now extinct on the mainland) which was the first Australian marsupial sighted by European explorers.

Another first are the large concrete wheat silos in the town, the first of their kind in Australia.

Exploration started with Charles Cooke Hunt in 1864. Hunt seems to have travelled far and wide for John Forrest is quoted to have said of him; Will I ever find a place where this man has not been before me.

In 1864, as he passed through the area, Hunt had his men construct a well. His diary entry for 4 March records:

'During the early part of the day the working party engaged sinking well - having made a hole about 10' long by 7' broad and 6' deep - by noon we obtained a plentiful supply of water for travelling purposes.'

Hunt sank many such wells through out the wheat belt and this was one of the contributing factors in opening the area up for settlement.

Waroona - Western Australia

Waroona is on the South West Highway between Pinjarra and Harvey.

There are a number of attractions in the area including Waroona and Drakesbrook Dams.

Goomalling

Goomalling township is situated in the Central Wheat belt area of Western Australia, 132km north east of Perth.

The name was derived from the Koomal Possum which inhabited the area in abundance when the district was first established. Now known as 'Place of the silver grey possum.' Goomalling was also called 'Coomarin' or 'Coomallyn'. The current name was first used by Alfred Hillman in 1846.

The present population of the Shire (as opposed to just the town) is approximately 1200. The district produces several varieties of wheat, lupins, wool, beef, cattle, pigs, fat lambs etc.

The Goomalling Historical Society has placed sign posts on the old school sites within the Shire - many can be spotted on the road verges.

Information of the local heritage trail is available from the Telecentre or Caravan Park. The walk points out places of historical significance around the town site of Goomalling.

Although only a small town with limited shopping facilities, Goomalling is a very nice place to stop and relax for a few days and it is fortunate in being at the centre of a number of other towns that can be reached in a series of days trips.

Suggested day trips from Goomalling:

1. From Goomalling you can head north to Wongan Hills and then travel east to Cadoux, south to Dowerin and back to your starting point.

2. Travel south west to Toodyay and then you can chose to go south to Clackline, then follow the Great Eastern Highway either west to Chidlow and north to Noble Falls before returning via Toodyay again, or you can turn east to Northam and then north to Jennacubbine and back to Goomalling.

3. The last tour is south east to Meckering then along the Great Eastern Highway through Cunderdin and Tammin and nearby Hunt's Well before turning north to Wyalkatchem and then returning via Dowerin.

Each of these trips is on sealed roads and will take you to a number of interesting places and covers a wide range of different terrain, ranging from thick forest around Chidlow to salt lake country near Cadoux and along the Goldfields Water Scheme.

The caravan park is one of the best shire parks in the state and is run by a very friendly and helpful couple. There is also an excellent hardware store just over the railway line (on the Dowerin road) which is (in general) cheaper than the hardware stores in Northam.

Goomalling is a wonderful example of good old fashioned country hospitality and town pride.

Kalannie

Kalannie is a small town in the Shire of Dalwallinu, in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, approximately 259 kilometres (161 mi) north-east of the state capital, Perth.
Kalannie was gazetted as a townsite in 1929. The name is Aboriginal, and is in a list of names from the York area where the meaning is given as where the Aboriginals got white stone for their spears.
The main resources in Kalannie are wheat and gypsum. Kalannie is connected to the narrow gauge rail network from a branch-line on the Amery to Bonnie Rock section.

Kellerberrin WA Western Australia

Kellerberrin is a town in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, 205 kilometres (127 mi) east of Perth on the Great Eastern Highway.

The railway line from Northam to Southern Cross was constructed through here in 1893-94, and this section opened for traffic in 1895. Kellerberrin was one of the original stations when the line opened. By 1898 there was a demand for small blocks of land in the area, and the government surveyed a number of 20-acre lots the same year. The area was gazetted as Kellerberrin townsite in 1901, and the government soon made more land available for settlers.

Early settlers from 1890 to 1910 from Ireland settled in the area of Kellerberrin and Wittem. Their family name was English. A road was named after this family.

The name Kellerberrin is Aboriginal, and is derived from the name of a nearby hill. The hill was first recorded as Killaburing Hill by an explorer in 1861, but in 1864 the explorer Charles Hunt recorded it as Kellerberrin Hill. One source claims that Kellerberrin is the name for the fierce ants that are found in the area, while another gives it as meaning camping place near where rainbow birds are found - kalla means camping place or place of, and berrin berrin is the rainbow bird.[2]

It also serves as a stop on the Prospector and Avonlink rural train services.
