Leeds Castle Kent England - beautiful Castle and Maze
see
Leeds Castle, 5 miles (8 km) southeast of Maidstone, Kent, England, dates back to 1119. In 1278 the castle came into the hands of King Edward I, for whom it became a favourite residence. The castle seen today dates mostly from the 19th century and is built on islands in a lake formed by the River Len to the east of the village of Leeds.
Built in 1119 by Robert de Crevecoeur as a Norman stronghold, Leeds Castle descended through the de Crevecoeur family until the 1260s.[1] What form this first castle took is uncertain because it was rebuilt and transformed in the following centuries. However, Adrian Pettifer speculates that it may have been a motte and bailey.[2]
In 1278, the castle became the property of King Edward I. As a favoured residence of Edward's, Leeds Castle saw considerable investment. The king enhanced its defences, and it was probably Edward who created the lake which surrounds the castle. A barbican spanning three islands was also built. Leeds Castle was also fitted with accommodation fit for royalty: a gloriette with apartments for the king and queen were added.[3] In the Late Middle Ages, the growth of the royal household meant fewer residences could accommodate the monarchy when they visited. As a result, the expenditure on royal residences in south east England generally decreased except for the Tower of London and Windsor Castle. The activity at Leeds Castle during the reign of Edward I is a notable exception to this pattern.[4]
The castle was captured on 31 October 1321 by the forces of Edward II from Margaret de Clare, Baroness Badlesmere, wife of the castle's constable, Bartholomew de Badlesmere, 1st Baron Badlesmere who had left her in charge during his absence. The King had besieged Leeds after she had refused Edward's consort Isabella of France admittance in her husband's absence; when the latter had sought to force an entry, Lady Badlesmere had instructed her archers to fire upon the Queen and her party, six of whom were killed.[5] Lady Badlesmere was taken and kept prisoner in the Tower of London until November 1322.[6] After Edward II died in 1327 his widow took over Leeds Castle as her primary residence.[7]
Richard II's first wife, Anne of Bohemia, spent the winter of 1381 at the castle on her way to be married to the king. In 1395, Richard received the French chronicler Jean Froissart there, as described in Froissart's Chronicles.

ABANDONED KENT CHURCHES | ST MARY'S LITTLE CHART
I was on my way to Pluckley in Kent with Andy from Kent Survival for a walk and wild camp, when we spotted this abandoned church beside the road. We had to stop and take a look. This is what we found.

Halling to Maidstone 10 Mile Walk (along the Medway)
In this episode, I walk and get wet on a 10 mile walk from Halling to Maidstone (Kent) along the River Medway. Part of the Medway Valley Walk, with the new(ish) section from Aylesford towards Allington Lock which now follows the river.
Pretty much 98% flat and only limited navigation skill required, it's a very easy walk that most people could achieve. 4 to 5 hours max with stops or slightly longer if you do more than one pub ;)

SWC Free Walk 139, Tadworth via Headley Heath and Box Hill Circular.16/9/12.
A zone 6 walk in Surrey of around 13 miles and costing the princely sum of £3 return!
Starting out from Tadworth station, and with no actual walk instructions to follow, the walker navigates (such skills and a compass definitely needed on this walk! Adds to the excitement...) out of the town and into the open countryside, soon passing under the M25, and then into the village of Headley. Soon after, the walk crosses The National Trust's Headley Heath, a fine mix of heathland, woodland and chalk downland, with some great views. There's an option to climb White Hill, but this wasn't possible today due to the walker getting way-laid by an 'incident' near High Ashurst Outdoor Centre...
There's a climb to more fine views from Juniper Top prior to more forest walking for lunch at Box Hill.
After lunch, this walker chose to follow the North Downs Way (replicating Box Hill Circular Walk for a while), bypassing Box Hill village, all the way to Buckland Quarry/Hills. Thereafter, it's back over the M25, on to Walton Heath and its golf course before retracing steps over the common at Tadworth and back to the station.
A lovely walk on the fringes of London, though taking a little longer to reach than some other zone 6 walks. Surprisingly rural for the location.
As it currently stands, this 'map walk' definitely requires navigation skills; the presence of an outdoor centre in the forest is no coincidence...

Time Out Walks, Book 2, Walk 17, Snodland to Sole Street. 23/12/12.
Having survived the Mayan apocalypse, for the last walk of 2012, this short 8 miler in Kent was chosen.
Shortly after leaving Snodland station, the walker is soon passing the reservoirs that have resulted from Man's previous industrial activities; some of these pits have now also become modern housing estates.
Soon, there's a steady ascent onto the North Downs, with some fine views back over Snodland. This is followed by some delightful woodland walking, with some steeper ascents, prior to lunch on the village green at Harvel, though a pub alternative also exists.
After lunch, it's more quiet lanes, meadows and woods before the countryside opens up just beyond Brimstone Wood. Shortly after, the walker reaches Luddesdown, which thankfully, was saved from the clutches of the M.O.D!
As dusk approaches, it's on past Henley Street and and on through fields to the station at Sole Street, where a surprise awaited this walker, though not filmed; the 16.17 train to London was delayed by 20 minutes by the steam train 'Tornado' having to take on water at Stelling! As this suddenly emerged from the night, it was a splendid sight to behold...such a shame that South Eastern didn't advise the reason for the delay initially, so it could be recorded!
An otherwise very pleasant, shorter walk in the Book 2 series!

(HD) Double 466s on the Bromley North Branch: 466015 + 466040 on 2J04. 05.02.18
Due to previous issues on the Bromley North Branch with single units stalling and also the issue of ice on the conductor rail causing issues with drawing power, the decision was taken to double up two 466s on the Bromley North Branch, these being 466015 + 466040, in this clip they are seen departing Grove Park on 2J04 for Bromley North. Filmed on 05.02.18
