Datong is a prefecture-level city in northern Shanxi Province in the People's Republic of China. It is located in a basin at an elevation of 1,040 metres and borders Inner Mongolia to the north and west and Hebei to the east. It had a population of 3,318,057 during the 2010 census, of whom 1,629,035 lived in the built-up area made of the three urban districts of Chengqu, Kuangqu and Nanjiao.

1. Yungang Grottoes Datong
The Yungang Grottoes, formerly the Wuzhoushan Grottoes, are ancient Chinese Buddhist temple grottoes near the city of Datong in the province of Shanxi. They are excellent examples of rock-cut architecture and one of the three most famous ancient Buddhist sculptural sites of China. The others are Longmen and Mogao. The site is located about 16 km west of the city of Datong, in the valley of the Shi Li river at the base of the Wuzhou Shan mountains. They are an outstanding example of the Chinese stone carvings from the 5th and 6th centuries. There are 53 major caves, along with 51,000 niches housing the same number of Buddha statues. CRRC Datong Co. Ltd. is a Chinese railway locomotive manufacturing plant based in Datong, Shanxi, China, founded 1953. The factory was a major producer of steam locomotives for the Chinese market up to 1988 when production switched to diesel powered locomotives. By the 1990s electric locomotives had begun to be produced, and became the major product of the works. In 2003 the factory became CNR Datong Electric Locomotive Co. Ltd. and a subsidiary of China CNR Corporation as part of a re-organisation of the Chinese railway manufacturing industry.

Hanging Temple of Hengshan - Datong, China

The magnificent, gravity defying Hanging Temple is one of the world's forgotten wonders. Clinging to a crag of Hengshan mountain the temple consists of 40 rooms linked by a dizzying maze of narrow passageways.

The temple was constructed by drilling holes into the cliffs side into which oak crossbeams and oak poles hold up the temple. The main supportive structure is hidden inside the bedrock.

The monastery is located in the small canyon basin, and the body of the building hangs from the middle of the cliff under the prominent summit, protecting the temple from rain, erosion and sunlight.

Interestingly the temple is dedicated to not just one religion, but three, with Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism all practiced within the temple and represented in 78 statues and carvings throughout the temple.

The Hanging Temple is also know as the Hanging Monastery or Xuankong, it's located about 60 km southwest of Datong, China in Shanxi province. The temple is said to have been built by a monk named Liao Ran during the late Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534 AD) and restored in 1900.

The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2010, it was listed in 'Time Magazine' as the world's top ten most odd dangerous buildings.
