Mississippi River near-record crest in downtown St. Louis: June 7, 2019
The Mississippi River crests in downtown St. Louis just shy of the all-time record set in 1993. Various normally-dry objects on the riverfront are either partially or completely submerged. Eddies and whirlpools form in the turbulent flow under the Eads Bridge. Copyright Dan Robinson
Missouri River Flooding 2019 - St Charles County, MO
The Missouri River meets the Mississippi River in St Charles County, Missouri. There is no doubt that 2019 has been a high water year. On June 5 and 6, 2019 we got as close to our parks as we could. This flooding is affecting the whole state, but this is to document what we are seeing in our area. In this video your will see Flood 2019 and the Missouri River levels along the Katy Trail in St Charles Missouri as well as the flooding from the levee breach earlier this year near Lakeside 370 Park.

River Des Peres Sandbagging Volunteer Event - Love, Love Brian Owens Music Video

Written by Brian Owens and Theresa Payne
The City of St. Louis’s efforts to fortify low-lying areas of the River Des Peres levees is nearing completion, thanks to the work of more than 500 volunteers.
Since 7 a.m., volunteers and City staff shoveled 630 tons of sand into 36,000 sandbags and built a sandbag wall along 1,200 feet of the River Des Peres between Morgan Ford and Alabama to hold back rising floodwaters. This follows Mayor Francis Slay’s call for volunteers to help as St. Louis faces near-historic river levels by Thursday’s crest.
“St. Louisans are resilient,” Mayor Slay said. “They stick together and help one another in times of need. I am very proud of the work we did and thank all of the City staff and volunteers, including one young man celebrating his 16th birthday today, for taking time out to fill and stack sandbags to help our neighbors.”
But, it’s not only local neighbors in need. With the river levee strengthened, the City of St. Louis is trucking 1,500 filled sandbags to Jefferson County’s Public Water Supply District #2 treatment plant, which is threatened by the overflowing Big River in Eureka.
“We were overwhelmed by the great people who came out to help us today,” Todd Waelterman, Director of Operations, said. “We’ve built a good little wall around some troublesome areas of the River Des Peres and have enough sandbags left over to give the boost to Jefferson County that it needs.”
The City of St. Louis remains under a state of emergency, which activates the City's Emergency Operations Center to coordinate response among City departments and services, along with outside agencies. It also allows the City to request state resources and reimbursement, as necessary.
As a reminder, residents should always call 911 for emergencies but are encouraged to use 211 for non-emergencies. Report City service needs, such as street light and signal outages, downed trees, or flooded roads, to the Citizens' Service Bureau at 314-622-4800.

Cliff Cave County Park Upper 1 mile Mountain Bike and Hiking Trail Overlook Loop
Fun ride that has some very technical and I would say dangerous parts if you don't approach correctly. I had a little accident myself which you will see. Been a long time since I've gone mountain biking on dirt trails like this. This video is GoPro footage I took of the trail which starts near the Overlook and goes down and under the bridge then back up to the Overlook.
Per Great Rivers Greenway website: Greatriversgreenway.org
Cliff Cave Park in the Mississippi Greenway offers stunning views of the Mississippi atop rocky bluffs that tower 170 feet over the river. It lies within one of the most naturally diverse plant and animal communities in the region, offering rocky, droughty hillsides as well as woodlands and wetlands.
This unique park within the greenway gets its name from the cave tucked in the bluffs of south St. Louis County. There is tremendous folklore surrounding the area, including stories from its past as a riverside tavern during the early exploration days of Missouri, a hideout for horse thieves as well a summer camping area for native Americans. It is known for its Karst topography – a region where the bedrock has been dissolved or collapsed, leading to caves or sinkholes.
The park offers hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails as well as picnic areas and shelters. You can enjoy both sun and shade as you explore trails in this section of the greenway. Click here for more information about the River Bluff and Spring Valley trails in Cliff Cave Park.
This area attracts hundreds of migratory birds in the spring and fall. In the summer, you can see Great Blue Herons and Egrets. Some bottomland woodlands and wetlands can be seen from the greenway.
Per Greatriversgreenway.org
“Mississippi Greenway: Cliff Cave County Park features a seven mile (paved) route along the Mississippi River and up the 170 foot bluff to a scenic overlook. There is also a connection to Telegraph road for people walking and biking. This segment of greenway lies entirely within Cliff Cave Park–named for the cave tucked in the bluffs of south St. Louis County. The park offers hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails as well as picnic areas and shelters.
Future Connections
Mississippi Greenway to River des Peres Greenway:
Construction to extend the Mississippi Greenway from its current endpoint on the River City Casino Property and connect with the River des Peres Greenway is temporarily on hold. The extension of the River des Peres Greenway between Alabama and Broadway is largely complete, but the remainder of the paved route will not be constructed until Metropolitan Sewer District completes repairs and sewer line improvements in this area. We are working with them to coordinate construction so we only build the greenway one time. Stay tuned for additional updates on the timeline for this project!
