Today we are exploring Chiang Mai, the largest and most visited city in Northern Thailand. It’s also Thailand’s most cultural city. People come to explore its temples, food, markets and its fun-loving culture. Chiang Mai means “new city,” it got its name when the Kingdom of Lana moved its capital from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai in the year 1296. Now come with me as we explore the top 10 things to do in Chiang Mai!
First stop is Wat Chedi Temple in the old town. This temple has two parts, the new temple and the ruins of the old temple that date back to the 15th century. People believe that this is where the Emerald Buddha was first kept before moving to Bangkok. Its free to explore the grounds and it’s a must visit in the old town of Chiang Mai.
The one thing you have to do in Chiang Mai is get a foot massage. Head to Loi Khro Road, a street that is full of massage parlors. The best place to get a massage is at Young and Beautiful massage. A half hour foot massage costs 80 baht or $3. It’s definitely worth it!
Next up we head to Chiang Mai’s Night Bazaar. It starts at sunset and ends at midnight, and is open every night of the year. Its 1 km in length, you can do some shopping, eat some food and enjoy one of the main attractions of Chiang Mai.
Wat Phra That is a temple located on Doi Suthep mountain. It’s a 30-minute drive to the entrance of the temple, and from there you must climb 200+ steps to the top. The walk isn’t so bad because of all the vendors selling fruits, shakes, food and souvenirs. From the temple you get incredible views of Chiang Mai.
Another night market you have to visit is the Sunday Market. It is the biggest market in Chiang Mai and it receives over 100,000 visitors in high season. You can buy everything here, including decorative masks like I did.
Warorol Market is Chiang Mai’s biggest whole sale market. It is a huge complex full of vendors selling souvenirs, clothing and food. You need to try Chiang Mai’s pork sausage, the most famous dish in the city. It’s very spicy!!
Now we head to Tiger Kingdom, a Tiger sanctuary. These tigers are all born in captivity, they eat twice a day and are cared for by veterinarians.
Bo Sang Village is a small community that creates bamboo umbrellas. Visit the handicraft center to see how they create these beautiful umbrellas from start to finish. Afterwards you can do some shopping and don’t worry about paying for extra luggage on your flight, because they will ship the umbrellas anywhere in the world! I had four of them custom made and shipped to me in the U.S.
Lastly, we visit the Elephant Nature Park, an Elephant sanctuary located about a 45-minute drive north of Chiang Mai. They have 47 elephants that were rescued from the logging and trekking industry. Lek Chailert, is the found of the sanctuary. She started working with elephants in 1992, then in 1995 she started her first sanctuary. Her goal is to educate the world about the situation with the Asian elephants. There currently are no fences so the elephants can roam wild 24/7!

Doi Suthep Tour - Chiang Mai Temples
Famous in Chiang Mai, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is a popular attraction for visitors and tourists coming to Thailand.
Located at the top of Doi Suthep mountain, it's a great place to come and visit when in Chiang Mai.
In this video, I take you around and show you the sights. There are some great views from the top and on the way up also.
I've also tried to give you a little history on the temple as well. My knowledge is fairly limited but if you are interested in this over 600-year-old marvel, there is more info over on Wikipedia.
I hope to bring you more videos like this one in the future, so if you like it please subscribe and let me know by leaving a comment below.

What to See in CHIANG MAI: The Incredible Wat Doi Suthep Temple
Thailand Travel Guide: What to do in Chiang Mai // Wat Phra That Doi Suthep
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep or the Mountain Temple is an absolute bucket list experience in Thailand. Traveling to Chiang Mai, Thailand, this temple is 45 minutes away from the city center.

When planning your trip to Thailand, you must give yourself ample time to visit some of the most beautiful Buddhist Temples in the world! Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand is famous for the elephant reserves and elephant experiences as well as to the beautiful Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.
Overlooking the city from its mountain throne, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is one of northern Thailand's most sacred temples, and its founding legend is learned by every school kid in Chiang Mai. The wát itself is a beautiful example of northern Thai architecture, reached via a strenuous, 306-step staircase flanked by mosaic naga (serpents); the climb is intended to help devotees accrue Buddhist merit, but less energetic pilgrims can take a funicular-style lift for 20B.
The terrace at the top of the steps is dotted with breadfruit trees, small shrines, rock gardens and monuments, including a statue of the white elephant that carried the Buddha relic to its current resting place. Before entering the inner courtyard, children pay their respects to a lizard-like guardian dragon statue known as 'Mom'.
Steps lead up to the inner terrace, where a walkway circumnavigates the gleaming golden chedi enshrining the relic. The crowning five-tiered umbrella marks the city's independence from Burma and its union with Thailand. Pilgrims queue to leave lotus blossoms and other offerings at the shrines surrounding the chedi, which are studded with Buddha statues in an amazing variety of poses and materials.

Doi Suthep: Top Things To Do In Chiang Mai | Thailand Vlog | Kathryn Tamblyn
Explore Chiang Mai's most beautiful temple, Doi Suthep with us! The gorgeous gold temple is located in the mountains above Chiang Mai and is one of the most sacred temples in Thailand. We took a songthaew up the mountain, then hiked the 306 steps to the top. The temple itself is stunning and the views are fantastic, too! Add it to your list - this is a must see when you visit Chiang Mai.
Chiang Mai's Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Info:
- Open from 6am to 6pm every day
- The entrance fee is 30 THB / person
- Try to go on a clear day for the best views
Getting to Doi Suthep: If you're with a group, I recommend taking a songthaew up and asking the driver to take you back down. If you're comfortable riding a motorbike, that's another great option.
This vlog was filmed in August 2016.
Hope you enjoy it!
