Naxos, the largest island of the Cyclades complex, is characterized by its beautiful, large sandy beaches, its traditional villages and the delicious cuisine. An island with a variety of landscapes that even the most discerning travelers will enjoy.
Greek Maldives: Donousa, a Bohemian island ~ Η μποέμ Δονούσα!
Donousa is a beautiful small island in the southeastern Cyclades, situated 10 miles north of Amorgos and east of Naxos. The island is 14 square kilometers and has a diameter of almost 5.5 kilometers. Gray steep cliffs plunge into the sea creating a spectacular scenery. Historically, the first inhabitants came to the island from the island of Amorgos and founded the village of Stavros where they built the church with its beautiful blue dome an emerald of Cycladic architecture.

According to ancient Greek mythology the island took its name from the god Dionysus, who lived on this island. Today whitewashed houses with blue and green windows make the Cycladic color of Donoussa 'more and more vibrant on every corner of the island. The scenery is complemented by a golden sandy beach and a hill with a pure white chapel, the Virgin Mary, where a brilliant celebration is held every year on August 15th. Eternal palms like turrets decorate the island, while the highest point, the mountain Pappas, where one can enjoy the spectacular view and one of the most beautiful sunset in Cyclades.
Kedros beach
A beautifull sandy beach 1Km from the port of Donoussa. Use your scuba gear and at a depth of four meters in the middle of the beach of Kedros, you can visit the shipwreck of a German ship that was sunk there by British aircraft in the Second World War.
(Camping - Not allowed on the beach, it is allowed only at specific places around the area of Kedros, please contact the Municipality of Donoussa for more information). (Nudism is allowed). Some lucky people that they visit the beach during April or Octomber and November can enjoy privacy, as they will be so alone there that could practically may have outdoors sex without anyone noticing!
Livadi Beach is one of most beautiful beaches around the island of Donoussa. Crystal clear blue waters and white sand everywhere.
(Nudism is allowed).
There is not enough drinking water in Donousa except the fountain in the village Mersini flowing incessantly. There is a boat called Donoussa Magisa - The Enchantress which transports tourists to remote idyllic sandy beaches to swim in the crystal clear green-blue sea and enjoy the simplicity at its greatness. There are also taverns with fresh fish, and several café-bars where every night all friends become one, while enjoy a drink at the same time with the wonderful landscape. There native rustic oven, where on a daily basis will fill your nose with new interesting smels. Donoussa is an island where its elegant simplicity, will help you relax, and enjoy nature at its fullest.
What to do on Donousa
Mersini
On the southeast end of the island, built on a slope, lies this mountainous village with a breathtaking view of the Aegean Sea. The houses are made of stone with fruit trees and vegetables in their gardens and the setting is overflowing with natural springs. The church of “Agia Sophia” stands out on the hill while there is a footpath starting from the hamlet leading to two of the most beautiful beaches of the island, Livadi and Fikio.
Circumnavigating the island
Circumnavigate the island on a caique for an unforgettable experience. Admire first hand Fokospilia – where protected seals monachus monachus seals find refuge- and the “Spilia tou Tihou”; both sea caves will leave a lasting impression on you.
Kedros beach
Venture a mere kilometre from the harbour and a heavenly bay with cedars, golden sand and blue waters will reveal itself. Set up your tent – free camping is allowed – and get your fill of the sea, the view and joyful groups of visitors, like you reveling in the harmonious atmosphere. And just to add that spice of adventure, on the sea bed there is the shipwreck of a German destroyer from World War II.

Camping is an outdoor activity involving overnight stays away from home in a shelter, such as a tent or a caravan.Generally participants leave developed areas to spend time outdoors in nature in pursuit of activities providing them enjoyment. Camping can be enjoyed through all four seasons.
Modern campers frequent natural parks, beaches, wilderness areas, and commercial campgrounds. Camping is a key part of many youth organizations around the world, such as Scouting, which use it to teach both self-reliance and teamwork.
All beaches, seas, mountains, forests, rivers, of this world belong to all of us the mankind. The goal is to teach each other the Love, the Respect and Protection of Nature. For freely travelling with our favorite people, our best friends and our lovers, protecting and cleaning the forests and beaches, enjoying life sometimes without clothing…
GUIDE for free and responsible Camping:
How do we coexist harmoniously with other campers, local residents and nature itself? It is important for campers to learn living together by following, at least, some common rules and habits: We park our cars & bikes away from the beach and we do not obstruct the access to public. We use bags for rubbish, including tissues as animals dig them out. We gather all our rubbish and any extra we find. Wear a plastic bag in your hand in order to make the process less uncomfortable. Determine where the “toilet” is and dig holes at least 30 cm each time or cover them with sand or soil. Instead of toilet paper we use water from the sea in a plastic bottle. We avoid the use of any shampoo and soap, in the water because they pollute the sea, lake or river. We are ready to understand the specific circumstances of the place where we are and to protect it with our presence. We respect the flora and fauna of the region according to the natural conditions. For example, in areas where the sea turtles lay their eggs, the fire can disorient them and their new born, or in areas of dense vegetation fire is very dangerous and forbidden. We have the tent several meters from the waves so we do not obstruct the other campers but mainly not to disturb crabs, turtles, birds. The insects are the residents of the area, we are the guests. We avoid insects with natural repellents, and by keeping the tent zipped closed all day. We do not consider the spot we are staying in as our property, we do not create conditions for permanent settlement. We offer, share, meet each other and create, to the desired extent, conditions of collective living with the other campers. Leave the forest or the beach as found, and if possible, much better.
