2. Rozhen Monastery Melnik
The Rozhen Monastery of the Nativity of the Mother of God is the biggest monastery in the Pirin Mountains in southwestern Bulgaria, nestled in the Melnik Earth Pyramids. It is one of the few medieval Bulgarian monasteries well preserved until today. The earliest archaeological evidence of medieval life at the place is a grave with a few coins and decorations from the time of Byzantine Emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos . Some other items also date to the 13th century while the marble frieze above the central gate of the church dates to the 13th or 14th century. A couple of new buildings were constructed in the monastery at the time of Despot Alexius Slav. The earliest written source testifying to the monastery's existence is a note on a chant book from 1551, today in the Great Lavra library ...

3. Rila Monastery Rila
The Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila, better known as the Rila Monastery is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. It is situated in the southwestern Rila Mountains, 117 km south of the capital Sofia in the deep valley of the Rilska River at an elevation of 1,147 m above sea level, inside of Rila Monastery Nature Park. The monastery is named after its founder, the hermit Ivan of Rila , and houses around 60 monks. Founded in the 10th century, the Rila Monastery is regarded as one of Bulgaria's most important cultural, historical and architectural monuments and is a key tourist attraction for both Bulgaria and Southern Europe. In 2008 alone, it attracted 900,000 visitors. The monastery is depicted on the reverse of the 1 lev banknote, issued in 1999.

Villa Melnik is a family-owned winery located near the village of Harsovo, about 7 km south of Melnik, Bulgaria. The winery has 30 hectares of vineyards. Grown are local and international varieties. The vineyards were planted in 2004, the winery was built in 2013. Produced are three brands of wines - AplauZ, Bergulé and Family Tradition. The Pirin Mountains are a mountain range in southwestern Bulgaria, with Vihren at an altitude of 2,914 m being the highest peak. One hypothessis is the mountain was named after Perun, the highest god of the Slavic pantheon and the god of thunder and lightning. Another version is that the etymology of the range derives from the Thracian word Perinthos, meaning Rocky Mountain. The range extends about 80 km from the north-west to the south-east and is about 40 km wide, spanning a territory of 2,585 km2 . To the north Pirin is separated from Bulgaria's highest mountain range, the Rila Mountains, by the Predel saddle, while to the south it reaches the Slavyanka Mountains. Dabnitsa - Spa Hotel Ivelia. Clean, friendly. Average service and poor food (very local, no english, but this can't be expected when this remote). Nice sauna and steam! 7/10 €25

Dospat - Family Hotel Badzho. Cosy and small with fridge but no mod cons. Very poor wifi etc, but again, very remote. Dospat overall was a disappointment. No viewpoint of the lake. If you want this, go for a high up hotel. Cheap €16. Good bakery on ground floor, ideal for buying burek, snacks and to top up your thermos with coffee.

Another difficult, undulating mountainous few days but so much to see. 110km or so over 2 days, but still with the hills, meant full days riding.

Dospat Reservoir is situated in the western part of the Rhodope Mountains, Bulgaria. The reservoir (formed by a dam in the town of Dospat, 82 km west of Smolyan) stretches nearly 19 km northwest to the city of Sarnitsa. At 1,200 m above the sea level, it is one of the highest dams in Bulgaria in terms of altitude, and, with its 22 km2 of water area, the second largest in capacity. It is fed by the Dospat River.
