Places to see in ( Broughton in Furness - UK )
Broughton in Furness is a small market town on the southern boundary of England's Lake District National Park. It is located in the Furness region of Cumbria, which was part of Lancashire before 1974. Broughton is mentioned in the Domesday Book as one of the townships forming the Manor of Hougun held by Tostig Godwinson, Earl of Northumbria
Market Square was formally laid out in 1760 by John Gilpin Sawrey, the Lord of the Manor, who lived at Broughton Tower,a large mansion just a short distance from the Square. In the 1990s the A595 road was diverted in an attempt to improve the environment of the town and help it retain its rural feel.
With Cumbria having retained its two-tier local authority structure, Broughton is located within the Cumbria County Council and the South Lakeland District Council areas. In 1976 the parishes of Broughton West, Seathwaite with Dunnerdale, and Angerton were merged, creating Duddon Parish Council.
It lies near the River Duddon, just inland from the coastal hamlet of Foxfield. Duddon Mosses is a site of special scientific interest with deer, lizards, adders and barn owls. With just 529 residents, in terms of population, Broughton-in-Furness ranks 5721 of the 7727 towns in the UK according to the 2011 census.
Traditionally the economy was based on fishing and agriculture; there is a regular livestock market. The creation of the National Park in the 1950s produced some tourism for the area, though most tourists still head further north or east into the central lakes. There is a Tourist Information Centre located in the main square.
In 1859, the Coniston branch of the Furness Railway, which passed through the town, was opened. Nearly one hundred years later, in 1958, the line was closed and dismantled, and the cleared ground is now a public bridleway. Broughton's nearest railway station is now Foxfield railway station, 2 miles (3.2 km) south west of the town.
The main west-coast road, the A595, used to pass through Broughton until the road along Duddon Mosses through Foxfield was designated as the A595. The stretch of road through Broughton has been designated the number C5009, although A595 can still be seen on older road signage.

Tidal bore on the River Duddon 8 April 2016
The river Duddon and its estuary are one of England’s best kept secrets. The estuary is surrounded by spectacular views of Duddon sands and the mountains of the Lake District. There is a small bore that runs up the Duddon on large spring tides. I filmed it from Dunnerholme Rock, which is part of the Dunnerhome golf course. The rock offers an elevated position to view and film the incoming tide and bore on the river. Askam-in-Furness 'pier' is about 2 miles away as the crow flies, and may offer an alternative viewing location; though binoculars may be required to get a good view of it.
The bore rose as it approached the rock, then disappeared (flat wave/undular) as it passed the deeper waters by the side, only to reappear once back into more shallow waters. The noise of the bore and subsequent incoming tide was very loud.
It took about 45 minuntes for the estuary sands to be almost completely covered in water.
High tide expected at Duddon Bar: 9.24m at 12:40
Bore passed Askam pier at 09:45
Bore passed by Dunnerholme Rock at 10:22

Viking Legacy of The Lake District
The area of Northern England now known as Cumbria was once part of Cumberland and was inhabited by Welsh people until the Anglo-Saxon king Edmund took over the area and later gave it to King Malcolm of Scotland in exchange for his military support. The area still has a great many Celtic names like Carlisle, Penrith and Penruddock.
Many English people moved into the area too, though they were outnumbered by Welsh at first, there is also an Anglo-Saxon influence on Cumbrian toponymy with examples such as Keswick, Workington and Barrow-in-Furness.
Finally the Vikings settled the area in the 10th century, Norwegians came over from Ireland, Iceland and the Northern islands and left their mark too. Many mountains, rivers and valleys have Norse names, as attested by the abundance of the elements fell, -ay and dale (Mickledore, Scafell, Rothay, Duddon, Langsleddale, Allerdale). Many town and villages also contain Norse elements (Whitehaven, Ravenglass, Silloth, Ulverston, Ambleside) and the second largest lake, Ullswater is thought to be named after the Nordic god Ullr (Ull) as this video reveals.
An excerpt from Grímnismál mentions Ull, the mysterious god of hunting and skiing:
May he have Ull's help, and of all of the gods,
who first takes hold of the flame;
for worlds fall open to the sons of the Æsir,
when they carry up cauldrons.
The video also shows Aira Force, a waterfall named by Vikings, the word eyrara, meaning gravel-bank stream or river and word force, from fors, is used in many parts of northern England as a synonym for waterfall.

Lake District Walks: Evening Views over Elterwater
An evening walk from Elterwater to Dow Bank, a prominent summit on the ridge between Loughrigg and Silver Howe. Dow Bank should not be confused with Dow Crag, which is situated between Coniston and the Duddon Valley and is three times higher. Dow Bank is not well known. At 270 metres it is not high enough to be included in any of the mountain lists, such as Wainwrights, Birkets or Marilyns, so most fell walkers simply ignore it. But the short climb and walk to reach it provides a huge reward in terms of the views from the top, which include 5 bodies of water; Grasmere, Rydal Water, Windermere, Elterwater and Loughrigg Tarn, as well as many of the mountains and fells of the South Lakeland region.
If you fancy walking in the Langdale valley then why not check out our guide book page, which has a range of easy to use walking books featuring routes both high and low throughout the region. Check out our selection at

Going down on Hardknot Pass, Lake District, England - Lot's of Animals!
Hardknott Pass is a hill pass that carries a minor road between Eskdale and the Duddon Valley in the Lake District National Park, Cumbria, England. The tarmacked highway, which is the most direct route from the central Lake District to West Cumbria, shares the title of steepest road in England (the other is Rosedale Chimney Bank in North Yorkshire). It has a maximum gradient of 1 in 3 (about 33%). The pass is described as one of the most challenging roads in Britain. - Source: Wikipedia
Abandoned Baildon Bank Mine and Quarry Exploration - First Walkthrough
Join me as I explore an old stone mine on Baildon Bank (north of Bradford) overlooking Airdale.
The area has Rough Rock and Rough Rock Flag sandstone layers which were deposited around 300 million years ago by flowing water (large estuary?) and being exposed along a 1km strip have been extensively quarried for building materials. As well as workings on the surface the rock was also mined underground. The rock was variable quality with lesser quality rock being used for stone bricks, kerbs etc. and high quality flagstone used for flooring and other larger pieces. Fossilised plants and trees are found were found in some rocks, which were discarded because they weaken the structure.
The cliffs along the bank are popular with climbers.
The mines were abandoned over 100 years ago and the land was sold to Bradford Corporation in 1899 (the local authority - now Bradford Metropolitan District Council) by the Lord of the Manor and the entrances were blasted shut and the site partially filled in and levelled.
!!!Mines are dangerous places and should not be explored!!!!, do so at your own risk. In this mine the 2-3m drop from the passage from the outer entrance cave to the first chamber is probably the most dangerous part (and could be difficult to get out again), although there is also a risk of falling rocks and collapse in the rest of the mine. It is unclear to me if all of the large boulders inside are a result of parts of the roof falling over time, or if they fell when the mine was blasted to seal it, certainly in its present state it is hard to see flat floor in most of the chambers.
I haven't found much detail on the quarry and mine on the internet and haven't seen any other videos of anyone getting further into the mine than the outer cave. The chambers are dark and large and so are hard to light for filming.
It's hard to get a picture of the layout from the video but as a basic description from memory - there is an outer cave with a couple of (crawling) ways down into a slightly larger cave/chamber: a steeper descent from the left or a junk strewn gentler slope on the right. From that chamber there is a short passageway off to the left leading to the first large chamber (30mx6mx6m?? - I am terrible at estimating distances) there are a further one/two chambers in line going on from the end of this and turning left in the middle chamber is an entrance to another chamber to the right running parallel with the initial three, and a blocked passage to the left. continuing across this chamber is another parallel chamber to the right and blocked passage/chamber to the left - i.e. three parallel sets of chambers. There are many places where further passages from the chambers have been blocked with loose boulders and some bricked up with stone, several of which I only noticed on the video - the rocks are so strewn about I didn't notice at the time. Some of the blocked passages which go off from the chambers could possibly be squeezed into.
The initial large chambers were quite wet with water dripping drown from the roof.
There are further caves/entrances along the bank I haven't looked in.
Sadly my camera ran out of space as I was walking back out, so the last couple of minutes were recorded in much poorer quality on my phone.
