4K WALKING IN HEREFORD ENGLAND
Hereford (/ˈhɛrɪfərd/ (About this sound listen)) is a cathedral city, civil parish and county town of Herefordshire, England. It lies on the River Wye, approximately 16 miles (26 km) east of the border with Wales, 24 miles (39 km) southwest of Worcester, and 23 miles (37 km) northwest of Gloucester. With a population of 58,896,[1] it is the largest settlement in the county.
The name Hereford is said to come from the Anglo-Saxon here, an army or formation of soldiers, and the ford, a place for crossing a river. If this is the origin it suggests that Hereford was a place where a body of armed men forded or crossed the Wye. The Welsh name for Hereford is Henffordd, meaning old road, and probably refers to the Roman road and Roman settlement at nearby Stretton Sugwas. Much of the county of Herefordshire was Welsh-speaking, as reflected in the Welsh names of many places in the county (see History of Herefordshire).
An early town charter from 1189 granted by Richard I of England describes it as Hereford in Wales.[2] Hereford has been recognised as a city since time immemorial, with the status being reconfirmed as recently as October 2000.[3][4]
It is now known chiefly as a trading centre for a wider agricultural and rural area. Products from Hereford include: cider, beer, leather goods, nickel alloys, poultry, chemicals, and cattle, including the famous Hereford breed.
Hiking North of the Border: Mont Hereford, Québec
On 7/31/2016, I hiked my 300th different mountain, 2,851 ft (869 m) Mont Hereford in southern Québec, approx. 12 km north of the border from Canaan, VT. Despite the modest height of the mountain and the mellowness of the hike, it was surprisingly and pleasantly scenic...

The Story
Join us on an open water swim in the River Wye in Herefordshire. Situated in the Wye valley of Outstanding Natural Beauty the small journey to the swim site takes in one of the largest elluvial flood planes in Great Britain (the River Lugg Flats) and the Confluence of the River Wye at Mordiford. This stretch between Mordiford and Fownhope is popular in Summer. With woodlands to explore within the Woolhope Dome a 5,000 hectare expanse of ancient woodland in addition it's a magical spot practically on the doorstep of the city of Hereford some 5/6 miles East of its centre. A pleasant afternoon we met old friends unexpectedly kayaking from Hereford. The plan was to swim a bit of distance but alas the River Wye beckoned a more relaxed approach on this occasion. A gentle swim and meeting of meandering minds was the order of the day in place of a calorie burn. Indeed, the only thing burning on this particular day in Herefordshire's Wye Valley was the sun.

Kingsclere Circular Walk via Watership Down 29 August 2009
A 14.5 mile circular walk from the large village of Kingsclere in Hampshire. The walk went via Watership Down (immortalised in the famous novel about a group of rabbits by Richard Adams), Ladle Hill, Sydmonton, back to Watership Down (the route was a figure of eight) and Hannington village. The walk took in some really exceptional views. The walk took place in sunny/partly cloudy weather on Saturday 29 August 2009.
