Stockholm is the capital of Sweden and the largest city of Fennoscandi Stockholm is the most populous city in Sweden, with a population of 871,952 in the municipality , 1,372,565 in the urban area (2010), and 2,119,760 in the metropolitan area (2010). As of 2010, the Stockholm metropolitan area is home to approximately 22% of Sweden's population.
Founded in c. 1250, possibly as early as 1187, Stockholm has long been one of Sweden's cultural, media, political, and economic centres. Its strategic location on 14 islands on the coast in the south-east of Sweden at the mouth of Lake Mälaren, by the Stockholm archipelago, has been historically important. Stockholm has been nominated by GaWC as a global city, with a ranking of Beta+. In The 2008 Global Cities Index, Stockholm ranked 24th in the world, 10th in Europe, and first in Scandinavia.Stockholm is known for its beauty, its buildings and architecture, its abundant clean and open water, and its many parks.It is sometimes referred to as Venice of the North.
Stockholm is the site of the national Swedish government, the Parliament of Sweden (Riksdagen), the Supreme Court of Sweden (Högsta domstolen), and the official residence of the Swedish monarch as well as the prime minister. Since 1980, the monarch has resided at Drottningholm Palace in Ekerö Municipality outside of Stockholm and uses the Stockholm Palace as his workplace and official residence. Stockholm is the capital and largest city of Sweden, with nearly 2 million inhabitants within its vicinities.
The inner city is made up of 14 islands connected by some 50 bridges on Lake Mälaren, which flows into the brackish Baltic Sea, and passes the Stockholm archipelago with some 24,000 islands and islets.
Stockholm is a cosmopolitan place with both classical and modern architecture, and a captivating Old Town, Gamla Stan. Over 30% of the city area is made up of waterways, and another 30% is made up of green spaces. Air quality is fourth best of the European capitals - behind Zurich, Copenhagen and Vienna.

This article gives an overview of the Stockholm metropolitan area, Stor-Stockholm, which includes Stockholm County except Norrtälje municipality, which is in Roslagen.

Most venues are found in the inner city, innerstaden, historically the zone within the city tolls. The Municipality of Stockholm extends beyond the inner city, including the western and southern suburbs.
The inner city[edit]
Norrmalm
Norrmalm contains the central business district known as City, with several department stores and shopping malls, museums, hotels and restaurants too many to mention, most of Stockholm's major theatres, and the central railway station. The pedestrian shopping street Drottninggatan runs in a north-south direction through the area, by the square Sergels Torg. The islets Skeppsholmen and Kastellholmen can be reached on foot. Vasastan is a mainly residential area, where the Odenplan square offers shopping and nightlife.
Östermalm
Östermalm is an affluent borough, including Nationalstadsparken, the National City Park. The Stureplan square is a hub for upmarket shopping and nightlife. Södra Djurgården or simply Djurgården is an island-park, with several major tourist venues - the Skansen open air museum, the Gröna Lund amusement park, and the Vasa Museum. The borough also contains a forest, a museum cluster with the Science and Technology Museum and Kaknästornet, as well as Stockholm University and the Royal Institute of Technology. The Frihamnen cruise port is on the eastern edge.
Gamla Stan
An island with great waterfront views, the northern part of the Old Town is dominated by the Royal Palace and the Swedish Parliament. The rest of the island is a picturesque collection of old buildings and narrow cobblestone streets. The adjacent island Riddarholmen holds a church and several old government buildings.
Södermalm
Södermalm is a rugged island with buildings of all ages. It is always commonly referred to as Söder (The South). Fjällgatan offers some of the best views of Stockholm and the Baltic Sea inlet. The major north-south street Götgatan and adjacent streets are littered with a variety of restaurants, bars and shops. The Best of Sweden - Birka (Old Stockholm)
During the Viking Age, Birka, on the island of Björkö (literally: Birch Island) in Sweden, was an important trading center which handled goods from Scandinavia as well as Central and Eastern Europe and the Orient. Björkö is located in Lake Mälaren, 30 kilometers West of Stockholm, in the municipality of Ekerö. The archaeological sites of Birka and Hovgården, on the neighbouring island of Adelsö, make up an archaeological complex which illustrates the elaborate trading networks of Viking Europe and their influence on the subsequent history of Scandinavia. Generally regarded as Sweden's oldest town, Birka (along with Hovgården) has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993.

Stockholm and Royal Drottningholm Palace
The Drottningholm Palace (Swedish: Drottningholms slott) is the private residence of the Swedish royal family. It is located in Drottningholm. It is built on the island Lovön (in Ekerö Municipality of Stockholm County), and is one of Sweden's Royal Palaces. It was originally built in the late 16th century. It served as a residence of the Swedish royal court for most of the 18th century. Apart from being the private residence of the Swedish royal family, the palace is a popular tourist attraction (Wikipedia). Taken on a Panasonic SD720 camcorder and edited with iMovie.
Birka - The Viking City
Birka - The Viking City was founded in the mid 700’s at the island Björkö in Lake Mälaren. It is one of Sweden’s 15 World Heritage Sites on UNESCO’s list. It’s also considered to be Sweden’s first city. The video shows some of the highlights from a day trip by boat from Stockholm City to Björkö.
