Los Angeles Union Station (LAUS), better known as its original name, Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal (LAUPT) is one of the best-recognized terminals in the western United States. When built LAUPT was served by the Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, and Santa Fe hosting some of the West’s most prominent passenger trains. Unfortunately, it was completed during the waning days of rail travel as the public abandoned trains for other modes of transportation. The station's high water mark occurred only during its first decade of operation. After World War II its importance dwindled but its fate proved far brighter than several others across the country. Despite its late construction LAUPT has been in continual use since it opened and is ready to handle the resurgence of passenger rail in the 21st century.

General Information About Union Station (Los Angeles):
Widely regarded as “the last of the great train stations”, Los Angeles Union Station is the largest railroad passenger terminal in the Western United States.
Originally known as the “Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal”, it was intended to serve as a consolidation of the three local railroad terminals and the railroads they had served (Southern Pacific, Union Pacific and Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe) with construction costs shared by these railroads.
Designed in a unique blend of Spanish Colonial, Mission Revival and Art Deco styles by the father-son architect team of John and Donald Parkinson, the facility was completed at a cost of $11 million in 1939 and opened with a lavish, star-studded, three-day celebration attended by a half million Angelenos.
With its vast waiting room and enclosed garden patios, the station itself is a reflection of the grandeur and seductive climate that is Los Angeles. Travelers who strolled to their trains along terra cotta tile floors with their inlaid marble strips walked beside extravagant interior walls designed with both travertine marble and early models of acoustical tiles.
Passengers could visit the famous Harvey House restaurant, located in the southern area of the main building. Designed by famous Southwestern architect Mary Coulter, it was the last of this line of restaurants to be constructed in a passenger terminal.
Within just a few years of opening, Los Angeles Union Station transformed into a bustling 24-hour, seven-day-a-week hive of activity with as many as 100 troop trains carrying tens of thousands of servicemen through the terminal every day during World War II.
But the war ended and so did the rush of passengers, as air and automobile travel became the vogue through the next several decades. By the 1970s, Santa Fe's legendary Super Chief and El Capitan, the Southern Pacific's Sunset Limited and Daylight, and the Union Pacific's City of Los Angeles vanished from the rails.
In 1980, the station was entered into the National Register of Historic Places.
Currently, Los Angeles Union Station is linked to the Patsaouras Transit Plaza, which opened in 1995, and offers transit connections to destinations throughout Los Angeles. It also serves as the primary regional hub for Amtrak’s 36 daily trains and Metrolink’s five-county commuter train service, and as a transfer point for Metro’s Red, Purple and Gold Lines.
In April 2011, Metro completed the acquisition of the Los Angeles Union Station property, including 38 acres and 5.9 million square feet of development rights. Metro will oversee future development of the terminal to meet local office, retail, entertainment and residential needs, as well as Southern California’s evolving transportation system. Activity at the Los Angeles Union Station is expected to surge as expansion of Metro’s system connects more lines into the station.
A grand lady still, Los Angeles Union Station’s best years are yet to come.

Honolulu is the capital and largest city of the U.S. state of Hawaii. The city is the main gateway to Hawaii and a major portal into the United States. The city is also a major hub for international business, military defense. Honolulu is the westernmost major U.S. city. In 2015, Honolulu was ranked as one of the safest cities in the United States. Honolulu is the most remote major city in the world. The closest location on the mainland to Honolulu is the Point Arena Lighthouse in California, at 2,045 nautical miles.
POPULATION
The population of the Honolulu was 400,000 as of the 2017 population estimate. Asian Americans represent the majority of Honolulu's population.
HISTORY
The name Honolulu means sheltered bay or peace of shelter in Hawaiian. The old name is Kou. The city has been the capital of the Hawaiian Islands since 1845. And gained historical recognition following the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan near the city on December 7, 1941.
In 1794, Captain William Brown of Great Britain was the first foreigner to sail into what is now Honolulu Harbor. More foreign ships followed, making the port of Honolulu a focal point for merchant ships traveling between North America and Asia.
The late 1800s and early 1900s brought the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy and subsequent annexation by the United States.
ECONOMY
Honolulu is a major financial center of the islands and of the Pacific Ocean. American rule for the islands brought rapid economic growth to Honolulu and saw the rise of tourism and the first hotels were constructed in Waikiki. Honolulu acts as a natural gateway to the islands' large tourism industry, which brings millions of visitors and contributes $10 billion annually to the local economy.
TOURISM
Hawaii's best known tourist destination is Waikiki Beach. Around 7.6 million visitors comes to the islands. Today, Honolulu is a modern city with numerous high-rise buildings, and Waikiki is the center of the tourism industry in Hawaii, with thousands of hotels. Honolulu International Airport is the main aviation gateway for the Hawaiian Islands.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
Honolulu has a very moderate, tropical climate, with very little change of temperature throughout the year. The average high is 27-32°C and the average low is 19-24°C any time of the year. The best time to visit Oahu is from mid-April to early June or between September and mid-December. During these shoulder seasons, attractions are less crowded, festivals are plentiful and airfare and room rates are at their lowest.
MILITARY
American rule also brought the U.S. military, which built numerous bases in the islands, not least of which was nearby Pearl Harbor; now famous for the surprise attack by the Japanese in 1941, which brought the U.S. into World War II in the Pacific.

Yosemite National Park's massive giant sequoias (Sequoiadendron giganteum) live in three groves in the park. The most easily accessible of these is the Mariposa Grove near the park's South Entrance, off of the Wawona Road (Highway 41). Two smaller—and less visited—groves are the Tuolumne and Merced groves near Crane Flat. The Mariposa Grove contains about 500 mature giant sequoias. To get there: Use the two-mile Mariposa Grove Road, which is open from approximately April through November.
With necks-turned-straight-up, grove visitors often ask: How old is that tree? So, just how long can certain Yosemite tree species live? Whitebark pine, Western juniper and Douglas-fir can live more than 1,000 years while giant sequoias can live more than 3,000 years. Giant sequoias are the third longest-lived tree species with the oldest known specimen to have been 3,266 years old in the Converse Basin Grove of Giant Sequoia National Monument. (Note: Giant sequoias are only outlived by bristlecone pines—oldest aged at 4,844 years in the Great Basin—and by Alerce trees—oldest aged at 3,639 years in Chile.) Yosemite’s famous Grizzly Giant in the park’s Mariposa Grove is best estimated to be 1,800 years old plus or minus a few centuries, which is nothing to a giant sequoia.
Scientists currently rank the Grizzy Giant's large size, or volume, as No. 25. (The largest by volume is the General Sherman tree in Sequoia National Park.) Remember that the largest giant sequoias, like the Grizzly Giant, often owe their size to rapid growth rather than age, so an old giant sequoia will not necessarily be the largest specimen.

The study of visitor use impacts on sequoias, particularly compaction and erosion of soils near the base of the trees due to trampling, has long concerned ecologists. In 1962, a University of Michigan academic assessed human impacts on the Mariposa Grove to inform park management. Twenty-first century scientists applaud this early recognition to study and to measure how human's actions might prove detrimental to the giant sequoia's health and vigor. California's western Sierra Nevada had more frequent fires between 800 and 1300 than at any time in the past 3,000 years, according to a 2009 study based upon tree-ring research. Scientists reconstructed the history of fire during this droughty period by dating the years in which fire scars were found in ancient giant sequoia trees in the Giant Forest of Sequoia National Park. The result: These 500 years, known as the Medieval Warm Period, had the most frequent fires in the 3,000 years studied. During this period extensive fires burned through parts of the Giant Forest at intervals of about 3 to 10 years. Any individual tree was probably in a fire about every 10 to 15 years.
