Old scenes of Shawneetown, Illinois 1937
Old photographs of Shawneetown, Illinois taken back in 1937 and 1939 during the Great Depression with scenes of people going about their day along with pictures of towns folk and the aftermath from the devastating flooding of the Ohio River.
The city of Shawneetown was completely inundated and the residents were forced to move to a tent city on the outskirts. Property damages in the southern Illinois region amounted to more than $75 million ($1 billion in 2012). Over three hundred bridges were smashed, six schools were ruined, and twelve hundred submerged homes. Flood waters were recorded at 65.4 feet. Damage in Old Shawneetown was so cataclysmic the town relocated three miles inland to higher ground away from the river.
Driving from Lexington, KY to Louisville, KY via I64
On day 3, I drove to Indianapolis, Indiana. But first, I went to Louisville and Cincinnati, Ohio. This is part one of that day.
My Sony HXR-NX100 rode shotgun on a tripod shooting at 4 fps. The tripod was held in place using bungee cords giving it I nice smooth feel, even on bumpy roads. I also used this same camera to shoot various scenes around the country, and to interview folks.
Original music by Nim Portakey and/or created by Pinnacle Studio ScoreFitter.
