Ellensburg is a city in, and the county seat of, Kittitas County, Washington, United States. The population was 20,326 in a 2017 census estimate. Located just east of the Cascade Range on Interstate 90, Ellensburg is the most centrally located city in the state, and is the home of Central Washington University . The Wild Horse Wind Farm is a 273-megawatt wind farm that generates energy for Puget Sound Energy that consists of one hundred twenty seven 1.8-megawatt Vestas V80 turbines and twenty two 2.0-megawatt Vestas V80 turbines on a 10,800-acre site in Kittitas County, Washington, 17 miles east of Ellensburg, Washington. The turbines are placed on the high open Shrub-steppe ridge tops of Whiskey Dick Mountain, which was chosen for its energetic wind resource, remote location, and access to nearby power transmission lines. The towers are 221 feet tall, and each blade is 129 feet long, with a total rotor diameter of 264 feet , larger than the wingspan of a Boeing 747. Umtanum Ridge Water Gap is a geologic feature in central Washington state in the United States. It was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1980.The Umtanum Ridge Water is a water gap cut by the Yakima River through Manastash and Umtanum Ridge anticlines, which are part of the Yakima Fold Belt near the western edge of the Columbia River Plateau located in central Washington. This National Natural Landmark is characterized by a series of steep-sided ridges in the Columbia River basalt which are cut through axially by the Yakima River. It is also referred to as the Yakima River Canyon, and is located between the cities of Ellensburg and Yakima. Washington State Route 821, originally the main route between Ellensburg and Yakima, parallels the river through the canyon.

Video shows you what to expect driving west from Sidney, BC to the south-east corner of Washington State. This is the first episode of a trans-continental road trip to Ontario, Canada through the USA.

The route for this leg is Washington State Ferries from Sidney, BC to Anacortes, WA. I-5 South to I-405 (to miss Seattle's traffic) to I-90 through the Cascade Range I-82 to Yakima, Kennewick, and the Oregon border (Umatilla).

Strange possibly megalithic rock in Washington State

This is on my family's property in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains. The stone looks unnaturally round and smooth on the south facing side, which may have been the top of the stone when it was once standing upright.

July 16, 2016 - The final day of my epic 7,100 km (4,410 mile) road trip through the Mountains and Prairies of Canada and the United States
has finally come. Starting in Spokane, Washington, near the eastern edge of Washington State, I blaze a trail westbound along Interstate 90 through the Cascade Mountains to the Seattle metropolitan area, then take a sharp right and head north towards Vancouver, British Columbia, in my home and native land.

Unfortunately I ran out of space to record about 33% of the way through this trip, in Ellensburg, WA, just before entering the Cascade Mountains. I may complete this full loop one day.

From Mountains to Prairies 2016 (Pt. 2) - Washington State's Bavarian Town of Leavenworth

July 2, 2016 - Welcome to Leavenworth, Washington, on the eastern side of the Northern Cascade Mountains. Leavenworth is located on the Wenatchee River where the forests of the Cascade Mountains and the dry interior of Washington State meet. Once just a sleepy little town with no character, locals then gave it a Bavarian makeover to increase tourism...and it totally worked. It brought me here, didn't it? I haven't been here since 1987 and, frankly, besides having WiFi, I doubt it's changes too much.

I made sure to stop at the local Christmas store, Kris Kringl, to pick up some items for my Christmas Village, too: a sasquatch. Of course!

Sadly I didn't have the time to visit the biergarten or sausage garten on this trip. Maybe next time.
