Montpellier - Could this French city rival Paris?
Montpellier used to rival Paris as France's pre-eminent city. Bustling with young energy but with more than enough historical monuments to explore, Montpellier is a perfect day trip from one of the bigger cities or for a longer stay.

Paris (French: [paʁi] ( listen)), is the capital and the most populous city of France. It has an area of 105 km² (41 mi²) and a population in 2013 of 2,229,621 within the city limits.[5] Paris is also the centre and hosts the headquarters of the Île-de-France or Paris Region, which has an area of 12 012 square kilometers (4 638 square miles), and a 2014 population of 12 005 077, or 18.2 percent of the population of France.[6]
Paris was founded in the 3rd century BC by a Celtic people called the Parisii, who gave the city its name. By the 12th century, Paris was the largest city in the western world, a prosperous trading centre, and the home of the University of Paris, one of the first in Europe. In the 18th century, it was the centre stage for the French Revolution, and became an important centre of finance, commerce, fashion, science, and the arts, a position it still retains today. Since the 19th century, the agglomeration has grown far beyond its administrative borders.
Paris is the home of the most visited art museum in the world, the Louvre, as well as the Musée d'Orsay, noted for its collection of French Impressionist art, and the Musée National d'Art Moderne, a museum of modern and contemporary art. The notable architectural landmarks of Paris include Notre Dame Cathedral (12th century); the Sainte-Chapelle (13th century); the Eiffel Tower (1889); and the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur on Montmartre (1914). In 2015 Paris received 22.2 million visitors, making it one of the world's top tourist destinations.[7] Paris is also known for its fashion, particularly the twice-yearly Paris Fashion Week, and for its haute cuisine, and three-star restaurants. Most of France's major universities and grandes écoles are located in Paris, as are France's major newspapers, including Le Monde, Le Figaro, and Libération.

A Bit Lost Around La Muette (Paris, France)
Reality! All I could remember about this neighborhood was that it's lovely and when I went on a job interview at the OECD around here in the '90s, my feet got sore -- it was quite a walk. Again, today, my feet got sore, but I had a great time.
My health is not good and I tend to fall and to tire easily. I just go slowly when I can go at all, and try to be careful. I forgot to bring one of those handy little books where you can find any street in Paris, and it was raining. I was early, though ...
A journalist from France Culture had seen something of mine in the new FREAK WAVE book, so I was interviewed in the huge, famous Radio France building. Paris is windy and sidewalks can be crowded, so umbrellas blow apart quickly and you poke people -- I seldom carry an umbrella. I forgot also to check down in the métro LA MUETTE for the plan du cartier (neighborhood map, not completely detailed but still helpful) and of course, up on street level, no one knew where Avenue President Kennedy was, nor the huge famous building. I laughed and met a lot of Americans and nice Parisians who just didn't know. Finally, an elderly man with a frugal half-baguette in a paper bag directed me. Know your French, or directions won't help! I had guests once who misunderstood toute droite (sp?) (straight ahead) for à droite (to the right) and ended up in Enghien-Les-Bains!
My shoes were waterproof enough and sturdy, but the soles were too hard and those charming cobblestones ... ouch! Another mistake was not taking a second pair of shoes along in my bag. I did have the small bottle of water, a little something to eat, a book to read for the long bus and métro rides here (it takes a long time to get around in Paris, I find), tissues (don't count on finding toilet paper!), and so on. Something is always forgotten! Oh, well.
This is it, unedited and very real. I saw quiet residential streets with beautiful buildings, the Eiffel Tower, nannies escorting children home after school (later that day), and the quickly-changing Paris skies. Fun!
