Bisti Badlands, New Mexico - The most beautiful places of the world
Located in the arid desert of northwestern New Mexico, the Bisti Badlands (formally the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness) offer one of the closest approximations of an unknown alien world as can be found right here on Earth.
The badlands are administered by the BLM (Bureau of Land Management), are free to enter, and are known officially, but less evocatively as the Bisti Wilderness Area. There are no signposts pointing the way to Bisti from any nearby towns, but the usual approach route is along NM 371 from Farmington, the largest town in the Four Corners region - this heads due south through wide open prairie land at the east edge of the great Navajo Indian Reservation, which extends for 200 miles across into Arizona.
The area takes its name not only from the striking stone formations that litter the landscape (bisti being a Navajo term meaning among the adobe formations), but from petroglyphs of a crane (bird, not construction equipment) that were found in the area—De-Na-Zin being the Navajo word for the animal.
The blasted landscape is covered in strange, undulating fungal shapes made of the colorful sandstone and shale. Huge hoodoos (tall, thin rock spires) and small labyrinths of odd stone shapes have been created by eons of water and moisture wearing away at a softer layer of ash, creating improbable, top-heavy oddities.
Despite looking like a readymade set for a science fiction or fantasy production, the area has not been widely used for filming, save for the 1977 film, Sorcerer.

Area 122 - America's WEIRDEST place - New Mexico!
Twice as strange as Area 51, 122,000 square miles of TOTAL weirdness, New Mexico USA!! Can it be real? Adobehenge? Huevos Grandes? Spanglish Muffins? TripeFecta? You decide! See what Governor Lew Wallace had to say about this ALIEN land. Enjoy!

AREA 122
Jim Terr © 2013
There's folks who wear the rebel flag to show... well, I'm not sure what.
There's guys who wear their saggy pants way down below their butt.
Yeah, everyone's got their way to say they're different from you.
But I proudly wear the t-shirt, of Area 1-2-2.
Yeah, New Mexico's 122,000 square miles
Without enough people to ring the state if they lined up single file.
Lew Wallace said, If you wanna see strange I'll tell ya where to go:
Past experience just don't work when you're in New Mexico.
Here's to Area 1-2-2, things are a little different here.
We put chile in everything -- eggs and jam and even beer.
Yes we're part of the USA, I suppose that's true.
But night is day and day is night in Area 1-2-2.
We know that aliens landed here sometime back in the day.
Some turned right around and left but some clearly chose to stay.
People pointing with the lips and houses made of mud,
Sunshine on the prairie while you're swept away by flood.
There's roadrunners and horny toads, yeah Animal Kingdom freakness.
And folks who think that using turn signals would be a sign of weakness.
There's folks who return library books 40 years after they're due.
It's all just part of the weirdness, of Area 1-2-2.
Here's to Area 1-2-2, things are a little different here.
We put chile in everything -- eggs and jam and even beer.
Yes we're part of the USA, I suppose that's true.
But night is day and day is night in Area 1-2-2.
Yeah, here's to Area 1-2-2, things are a little different here.
We put chile in everything -- our eggs and jam and even beer
Yeah New Mexico's part of the USA, strictly speaking that is true.
But night is day and day is night in Area 1-2-2.
