Rock City: I Can See Seven States, then Nashville - Traveling Robert
Great American Road Trip 2016 Part 2
On this week's video we visit a famous roadside attraction near Chattanooga, Tennessee called Rock City. Rock city is located on the Georgia side of the border, on top of the Lookout Mountain Ridge.
Rock City became a tourist attraction back in the early 1930s, at the site of a community called Fairyland, founded by one Garnet Carter and his wife Frieda. These rock formations happened to be inside the Fairyland community, and it was Frieda’s idea to develop this part of the property into a great rock garden, with all kinds of plants, trails around the rocks, and statues of gnomes and other fairytale characters imported from Germany. They claim that you can see seven states from the top of the mountain: Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. While on a clear day you can see the Smoky Mountains, that's still the Tennessee side. I don't have hard evidence of this but I have read that Kentucky, Virginia, and South Carolina are below the horizon, so the only way you could see them is if the Earth was flat.
In Rock City we also enjoy the music of Matt Downer - Old Time Traveler, an Alabama native and Chattanooga resident. He plays the fiddle, the banjo, and the guitar, and he has dedicated his career to the preservation of traditional music. He has studied the repertoire and techniques of many of the elder Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia musicians, so he is the real deal. What a treat it is to listen to his music.
As we continue towards Nashville we run into some trouble climbing the Cumberland Plateau , also known Monteagle Mountain. The car started overheating on the long 5% grade. While technically not a mountain, Monteagle got it's popular culture name due to a Johnny Cash song describing this treacherous portion of the road.

Pisgah National Forest is a National Forest in the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina. It is administered by the United States Forest Service, part of the United States Department of Agriculture. The Pisgah National Forest is completely contained within the state of North Carolina. The forest is managed together with the other three North Carolina National Forests (Croatan, Nantahala, and Uwharrie) from common headquarters in Asheville, North Carolina. There are local ranger district offices located in Pisgah Forest, Mars Hill, and Nebo.
The Pisgah National Forest was established in 1916, one of the first national forests in the eastern United States. The new preserve included approximately 86,700 acres that had been part of the Biltmore Estate, but were sold to the federal government in 1914 by Edith Vanderbilt. Some of the forest tracts were among the first purchases by the Forest Service under the Weeks Act of 1911. While national forests had already been created in the western United States, the Weeks Act provided the authority required to create national forests in the east as well. Although tracts in the future Pisgah National Forest were among the first purchased under the Weeks Act, the very first to receive formal approval was the 31,000-acre (130 km2) Gennett Purchase in northern Georgia. On March 25, 1921 Boone National Forest was added to Pisgah, and on July 10, 1936, most of Unaka National Forest was added. In 1954 the Pisgah National Forest was administratively combined with the Croatan and Nantahala national forests, collectively known as the National Forests of North Carolina.[5]
American forestry has roots in what is now the Pisgah National Forest. The Cradle of Forestry, (Biltmore Forest School), located in the southern part of the forest, was the site of the first school of forestry in the United States. It operated during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The school was opened and operated at the direction of George Washington Vanderbilt II, builder of the Biltmore Estate in Asheville. The Forestry Education offered at Biltmore was taught by Carl Schenk. A native German, Schenk was referred to Vanderbilt when Gifford Pinchot resigned to operate the newly formed Division of Forestry. The Cradle of Forestry and the Biltmore Estate played a major role in the birth of the U.S. Forest Service. Today these lands are part of an educational and recreational area in Pisgah National Forest.[6]
Located on the forest property is the Bent Creek Campus of the Appalachian Forest Experiment Station, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

“We bought a farm soon after we got married,” says Rick Merrill. “And as the kids started coming along, and they enjoyed horses, we were boarding horses. And it became clear to us that to have the full experience of having children growing up with horses, we needed to have a bigger farm. And we needed to have the pastures and all. So I bought this land in 1980, and we built the road and cleared the fields and dug the pond. And then in 1985, we built the house. And it was a great way to raise kids—Right here on the farm, taking care of horses, learning responsibility. Once I got here to Western North Carolina, I realized I didn't want to be anywhere else. This place is just so special. The scenery, the people, the pace of life, and it all fit.”
“It's very important for us to see that our children grow up in the way in life we did,” says Billy Taylor. “Flipping rocks over in the creek, finding a salamander, getting up in the top of a tree and looking down or up to see what's there. Just getting back to the old way of life, away from the video games and the TV.”
“The nurturing of an animal is a responsibility every kid should have,” says Rick. “It makes them realize that there are things more important than themselves and that they have to respect and care for an animal. I particularly enjoy growing vegetables. And that's an art form in itself, and it's very, very satisfying. Part of the rural way of life.”
There's a space in rural Western North Carolina for raising horses, raising gardens, or just raising yourself to the peace and quiet every morning.
“You know, it's so nice when you're having a long day at work, you can just ease out here with its close proximity to downtown Asheville,” says Billy. “Catch a fish and relax and spend the day. These beautiful mountain trout, rainbows and browns, put up a really great fight here. Nothing like catching one on a fly rod.”
People living out share their property with the deer, turkeys, and other forms of North Carolina wildlife that are our common visitors, but rarely ever a bother. If you appreciate having room to spread out, enjoy a quieter, slower pace of life, and want to nurture the land, then the rural lifestyle may be the fit for you.
