The Le Trou Aid Post Cemetery is a World War I cemetery located in the commune of Fleurbaix, in the Pas-de-Calais departement of France, about 3 kilometres south of the village of Fleurbaix on the D175 road .British soldiers of the 19th Infantry Brigade made the earliest burials at the site in October 1914 during the First Battle of Ypres. By the end of the war, the cemetery contained 123 graves. This number nearly tripled after a postwar consolidation of war burial sites, when Le Trou Aid Post was expanded by the architect Sir Herbert Baker.Described as one of Baker's most sentimental works, the rural site is surrounded by a narrow moat and sheltered by a grove of weeping willows. La Coupole , also known as the Coupole d'Helfaut-Wizernes and originally codenamed Bauvorhaben 21 or Schotterwerk Nordwest , is a Second World War bunker complex in the Pas-de-Calais department of northern France, about 5 kilometres from Saint-Omer, and some 14.4 kilometers south-southeast from the less developed Blockhaus d'Eperlecques V-2 launch installation in the same area. It was built by the forces of Nazi Germany between 1943 and 1944 to serve as a launch base for V-2 rockets directed against London and southern England, and is the earliest known precursor to modern underground missile silos still in existence. Cap Gris-Nez is a cape on the Côte d'Opale in the Pas-de-Calais département in northern France. It is between Wissant and Audresselles, in the commune of Audinghen. The cliffs of the cape are the closest point of France to England – 34 km from their English counterparts at Dover. Smothered in sea pinks and thrift, the cliffs are a perfect vantage point to see hundreds of ships, from oil tankers to little fishing trawlers, plying the waters below. On a clear day, the emblematic white cliffs of Dover on the English shore can be seen.

Fromelles

A reflection on the Battle of Fromelles 19-20 July 1916.

The Australians have a close association with Fromelles, as this is one of the sites where they lost heavily during the Great War. The Australian 5th Division, along with the 61st British (South Midland) Division, attacked here on July the 19th, 1916. At this time, the main Somme battles were raging around 40 miles to the south of Fromelles, and the intention was to make a feint here to prevent the Germans from bringing reinforcements to the Somme. Originally an artillery barrage only was planned, but then an infantry assualt was also agreed. The Australian attack here was their first serious battle in France, and the only one in which they achieved no success.

Walking in the Footsteps of my Grandfathers 2008, Proyart, Somme 1918, Western Front Battlefields, France. Position of the 14th MGC, 5th Division. Special interest both the German Heavy Amiens Guns operated near this area during the Great War.

13th Field Artillery Brigade, Unit War Diaries, Page 45 Trench Map shows in detail the railway lines in Red where the Amiens Railway Gun Moved from Proyart to Harbonnieres. Also shows connections to 15 inch Big Bertha Amiens Gun top right hand corner. The Battle of Amiens 8th August 1918. The Curry Brothers 50th Battery is very close to this action. This Artillery German Railway Cannon has always captured my imagination. The engineering side of how it can be disengaged from the bogies and mounted on a platform just like the PARIS GUN.

Another German Bertha Gun was located at Duzey 30km N/E of Verdun known as Gross Max Gun. Here is a great website from Pierre showing that memorial.

Cimetière militaire de Beaumont-Hamel (80)

Beaumont-Hamel est une commune française, située dans le département de la Somme en région Picardie. La commune située plusieurs mois sur la ligne de front ou très près du front a été fortement marquée par de violents combats.

Le 1er juillet 1916, le village est marqué par le quasi-anéantissement du régiment des volontaires de Terre-Neuve, le Royal Newfoundland Régiment (régiment royal de Terre-Neuve), dont il ne restait que 68 hommes une demi-heure après le déclenchement d'une des attaques majeures de la Bataille de la Somme. C'est là que l'armée britannique a utilisé pour la première fois en quantité importante un nouvel et puissant explosif à base de nitrates, de TNT et d'aluminium, l'ammonal, en 1916 dans la mine de la redoute. Le secteur ne sera plus attaqué par les alliés jusqu'au 13 novembre. Lors du lancement de la Bataille de l'Ancre les sapeurs anglais ont alors posé une autre mine, sous la mine de la redoute d'Hawthorn Ridge, cette fois, avec 13 tonnes d'explosifs. Elle a permis aux anglais de reconquérir la zone

Ce cimetière contient les tombes des soldats et marins dont 2495 britanniques, 42 canadiens, 2 néo-zélandais, 1 sud-africain et 1 allemand qui pour la plupart sont mort pendant la première bataille de la somme.
