Herzegovina (Hercegovina / Херцеговина) is the southern region of Bosnia and Herzegovina. While there is no official border distinguishing it from the Bosnian region, it is generally accepted that the borders of the region are Croatia to the southwest, Montenegro to the east, Mount Maglić to the northeast, and Mount Ivan to the north. Measurements of the area range from 11,419 km2 (4,409 sq mi), or around 22% of the total area of the present-day country.
The name Herzegovina means duke's land, referring to the medieval duchy of Stjepan Vukčić Kosača who took the title Herceg of Saint Sava. Herceg is derived from the German title Herzog.
In the modern Bosnian-Herzegovinian state, Herzegovina is divided between two entities, Republic of Srpska and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Republic of Srpska's part of Herzegovina, commonly referred to as East Herzegovina or, as of late, Trebinje Region, is administratively divided into municipalities of Trebinje, Bileća, Gacko, Nevesinje, Ljubinje, Berkovići, Istočni Mostar and Foča. Within the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Herzegovina is administratively divided between the cantons of Herzegovina-Neretva, West Herzegovina and includes the Livno and Tomislavgrad municipalities, which is part of the Canton 10.
Mostar is the best known and the unofficial capital. It is also the only city with over 100,000 citizens. There are no other large cities in Herzegovina, though some have illustrious histories. Stolac, for example, is perhaps the oldest city in Herzegovina. There have been settlements dating from the Paleolithic period (Badanj cave). An Illyrian tribe lived in the city of Daorson. There were several Roman settlements alongside the Bregava River and medieval inhabitants left large and beautiful stone grave monuments called stećak in Radimlja. Trebinje, on the Trebišnjica River, is the southernmost city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, near the border with Montenegro. Čapljina and Ljubuški are known for their history and their rivers; the village of Međugorje has religious importance for many Croats and Catholics.

The bridge crosses the Tara River. It’s wood made and 66m long. The road over the bridge is called M18. The bridge lies where the River Drina forms the border between the two countries.

One-day rafting Tara tour | Schedule
11:00 Getting ready for rafting tour, which includes; Introduction to the river guides – licensed skippers, learning about rafting equipment and finding the appropriate size for each participant, and basic information related to rafting rules and safety on the river.
Before departure on rafting boat, each participant receives adequate equipment; Neoprene suit, neoprene boots, safety vest and safety helmet. Also, every raft guide has a dry bag for small cameras. Starting on the water, as we say it here, is scheduled for 11.30. Before you is a pleasant ride in off-road vehicles through canyon nature. From the village Scepan Polje leads a country road and it goes along the canyon of Tara River. The starting point of whitewater rafting is location Brštenovica, where your adventure begins.
12:00 Arrival at the starting point of rafting, place Brštanovica.Before you begin your rafting guide will give you a safety briefing and more information about this extreme sport. Although rowing requires a certain physical exertion, adrenaline increases in each of the 22 whitewater rapids which will make you forget the physical effort. The most famous among the whitewater rapids are “Borovi” with 500m length and then one after the other; Varda, Cells rapid, Youngster rapid, Vjernovića Buk, Cegrlo… Length of the rafting day down the rapids of the river Tara is primarily dependent on the water level and lasts from 2 to 5 hours. During river trip, your guide – skipper, will introduce you to local landmarks and legends associated with the Tara River. He will also recommend the best places for swimming, diving and photography.
Together with the flow of the river Tara, our adventure ends in the Scepan Polje where rivers Tara and Piva make confluence and from there it is Drina River and all Bosnia and Herzegovina more down. Here we organize lunch at the campground on the river bank where you can expect a delicious and rich traditional meal. After lunch, free activities at the camp.

The Drina is formed by the confluence of the Tara and the Piva rivers, both of which flow from Montenegro and converge on the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina, at Hum and Šćepan Polje villages. The total length of the Tara river is 144 km (89 mi), of which 104 km (65 mi) are in Montenegro, while the final 40 km (25 mi) are in Bosnia and Herzegovina along which form the border between the two countries in several places. The Drina flows through Bosnia and Herzegovina northward for 346 km (215 mi), of which 206 km (128 mi) is along the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, and finally spills out into the Sava river near Bosanska Rača village in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Measured from the source of the Tara, its longer headwater, the Drina is 487 kilometers (303 miles) long.

The river is not navigable; however, together with the Tara it represents the main kayaking and rafting attraction in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro.
