This is a multi-part series of a trip I made to Sicily. I wanted to do and see as much as I could in 7 days, and with the help of my friend Salvo, I was able to see Catania, Aci Trezza, Aci Castello, Siracusa, Ortigia, Marzamemi, some lighthouses, Taormina, Isola Bella, Savoca (where the God Father was filmed), Agrigento, Valle Dei Templi, and so much more!! Learning about the culture and eating the typical local food along the way. Enjoy.

Siracusa - The sea train
There is a little train, one or two wagons not more, that connects Siracusa central station to one of the most beautiful seaside of east Sicily: Fontane Bianche and its surroundings. I took this train for the first time in summer 2018 when my old car engine broke exactly at the beginning of my holydays. After sharing the trip with dozens of bathers well organized to spend the day on the beaches, mostly tourists but local people too, I decided to apply the nickname of “Sea Train” to this line. I believe it fits very well in this case.
After the departure, the train leaves the chaotic city noise towards the idyllic countryside of Siracusa. It runs through olive groves, citrus and wheat fields, old farms and abandoned ruins, offering a nice view of Sicilian traditional agriculture. After less than one hour, the locomotive stops in the small ghost station of Fontane Bianche, just a quay and a thin shelter, nothing more. Cicadas song fulfill the air all around. It seems a forgotten stop in the outback without any trace of the sea but if you think you’ve lost yourself, you are wrong.
The sea is nearer than believed. The wonderful beach of Fontane Bianche is just two hundreds meters far downhill and, even with the sunshine on your head, the walk is easy and pleasant. The white sandy beach is perfect to spend your day of vacation. You can choose among several Bathhouses but there is always a free access to the shoreline. Moreover, if you have time to spend, maybe two or three days could be better, you can move along the coast in both directions, northward towards Ognina and Plemmirio or southward till Gelsomineto and Cassibile river, leaving the crowded harbor to explore the rest of the seaside, a sequence of low cliffs and hidden sandy bays. I’m sure you will appreciate. It is easy to find a location to overnight there (but book it in advance, especially during summer!) and, if you don’t like to walk for long distances, there is a bus line too to move up and down on the waterfront.
This brief movie has been filmed mainly with an Olympus mirrorless camera, the OM-D EM5 Mark II, coupled with an Olympus Zuiko Digital mm 25 lens. Drone footage have been obtained with a Mavick Air and the last two clips on the beach with an Eken H8R. Sounds are original. Post-production, as always, has been made with Cyberlink PowerDirector 15 and related suite.
The track “Spring Forward” is by Biz Baz Studio and is licensed in You Tube Audio library.
