Galax is an independent city in the southwestern part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,042. In 2015 the estimated population was 6,941.The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the city of Galax with neighboring Carroll County for statistical purposes. Galax is bounded to the northeast by Carroll County and to the southwest by Grayson County.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a National Parkway and All-American Road in the United States, noted for its scenic beauty. The parkway, which is America's longest linear park, runs for 469 miles through 29 Virginia and North Carolina counties, linking Shenandoah National Park to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It runs mostly along the spine of the Blue Ridge, a major mountain chain that is part of the Appalachian Mountains. Its southern terminus is at U.S. 441 on the boundary between Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Cherokee Indian Reservation in North Carolina, from which it travels north to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. The Virginia Creeper Trail is a 35-mile multi-purpose rail trail, located in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area of southwestern Virginia. The trail runs from Abingdon to Whitetop, Virginia, near the North Carolina state line – through National Forest and crossing numerous restored trestles and crossing the Appalachian Trail. The trail descends from Abingdon to Damascus, traversing rolling farm countryside and numerous parcels of private property – requiring opening and closing private gates along the route. From Damascus, hikers, cyclists and equestrians ascend to Whitetop, following Laurel Creek. Cyclists can use a shuttle service to Whitetop for the 17-mile return descent.

Grandfather Mountain is a mountain, a non-profit attraction, and a North Carolina state park near Linville, North Carolina. At 5,946 feet , it is the highest peak on the eastern escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains, one of the major chains of the Appalachian Mountains. The Blue Ridge Parkway passes by the south side of the mountain and also passes over the nearby Grandmother Gap. It is located at the meeting point of Avery, Caldwell , and Watauga counties.

The sound of guitars, banjos, fiddles and mandolins is what defines rural hill people of Virginia. At Mount Rogers School, students earn credit learning how to play mountain music. Catch a radio broadcast of live mountain music at Rex Theater in Galax, “Mountain Music Capital of the World”. Wayne Henderson has been making guitars for more than forty years. His love of music is exhibited in stories he shares while working on his latest instruments. In the Shenandoah Valley the community of Staunton is an historic stop. A local street fair brings a group of dancing “Morris Men” and several artists work at the hot glass exhibition. In Eastern Virginia, history defines the state. The National Park Service’s Jamestown Site is where historic remains of America’s first settlement lie today. The nearby Jamestown Settlement is a recreation of life in one of America’s first communities complete with Indian village, sailing ships and swordsmen. In Colonial Williamsburg, fully costumed characters from the late 1700’s interact with tourists. The Yorktown battlefield where George Washington’s troops defeated the British in the battle ending America’s War for Independence. Modern warriors visit the battlefield to study tactics that are still relevant today. Smoked country hams are one of the hallmarks of the state dating back several generations.

Shirley Plantation in Charles City County, VA

This is a photo slideshow of Shirley Plantation which is was settled in 1613 and the main house was built around 1723. The historic plantation is the oldest active plantation and the original family ancestors still live at the plantation. Daily tours are available of the grounds and the first floor of the main plantation home. The site features a list of some of the slaves that lived at the plantation. This plantation is one of the best plantations open to the public and is one of several famous plantations along the James River, near scenic Route 5. The plantation home features Georgian Architecture. Union solders used the plantation during the Civil War after they retreated from Richmond after the battle at Malvern Hill.
