1. Panama Rainforest Discovery Center Gamboa
The Panama Canal is an artificial 82 km waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a conduit for maritime trade. Canal locks are at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal, 26 m above sea level, and then lower the ships at the other end. The original locks are 34 m wide. A third, wider lane of locks was constructed between September 2007 and May 2016. The expanded canal began commercial operation on June 26, 2016. 6. Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute Gamboa
The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute is the only bureau of the Smithsonian Institution based outside of the United States, in Panama. It is dedicated to understanding the past, present and future of tropical ecosystems and their relevance to human welfare. STRI grew out of a small field station established in 1923 on Barro Colorado Island in the Panama Canal Zone to become one of the world's leading tropical research organizations. STRI's facilities provide for long-term ecological studies in the tropics and are used by some 1,200 visiting scientists from academic and research institutions around the world every year.

7. Chagres River Gamboa
The Chagres River , in central Panama, is the largest river in the Panama Canal's watershed. The river is dammed twice, and the resulting reservoirs—Gatun Lake and Lake Alajuela—form an integral part of the canal and its water system. Although the river's natural course runs northwest to its mouth at the Caribbean Sea, its waters also flow, via the canal's locks, into the Gulf of Panama to the south. The Chagres has the unusual claim of drainage into two oceans.

The Panama Canal locks are a lock system that lifts a ship up 85 feet to the main elevation of the Panama Canal and down again. The original canal had a total of six steps for a ship's passage. The total length of the lock structures, including the approach walls, is over 1.9 miles . The locks were one of the greatest engineering works ever to be undertaken when they opened in 1914. No other concrete construction of comparable size was undertaken until the Hoover Dam, in the 1930s. There are two independent transit lanes, since each lock is built double. Gamboa Rainforest Resort Aerial Tram Tour in Panama
The glide through the jungle on the Aerial Tram allowed us to see the rainforest. Our tour limited our animal watching excursion due to the heavy rain. However, we were lucky to view a toucan.Viewing the forest from the top of the Swiss-engineered aerial tram system was breathtaking. Gliding smoothly through the treetops, we experienced the wildlife sounds and peace of the tropical rainforest firsthand.
A Gamboa’s tour guide accompanied us throughout the entire tour. The 1.2-kilometer (3/4 mile) ride culminates at a hilltop where we had the opportunity to visit the Observation Tower. After walking up the spiral ramp, we experienced a panoramic view of the:

Gamboa Rainforest Resort has 163 guest rooms situated in a beautiful preserve. Historic Gamboa was established strictly for dredging the Canal and the hotel is built on its previous golf course.
Staff is wonderful. I was underwhelmed by the hotel.

Top 5 Favorite Places in Panama
Panama is an amazing country rich with diversity, culture and history. The country contains the oldest European settled colony on the Pacific side of the Americas as well as an environment containing many plants and animals. These are my top five favorite places in the country. . . . so far.Number one, the Panama Canal
The Panama Canal celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2014. The country also announced a plan that will double the size of the canal and allow for more ships to pass through each year. The Panama Canal is currently the only way to quickly pass through the middle of North and South America. The canal takes my top spot as it is an example of what human engineering can do. I highly recommend a visit to everyone that visits Panama.
Number two, La Cinta Costera
La Cinta Costera is a beautiful park that runs alongside the coast. It offers walking and biking trails. It starts at Punta Paitilla and ends in Casco Viejo.
Number 3, Isla Mamey
Located on the Atlantic side of Panama, about 2 hours drive away is the tiny deserted island of Isla Mamey. Isla Mamey is a popular destination for those looking to find paradise. The water is crystal clear and calm. The island has a small trail that wraps around. From Isla Mamey you will find excellent views of the ocean and also nearby islands. If you have time I highly recommend this tiny oasis.
Number 4, Gamboa Resort
Gamboa resort is located in the center of the country about 45 minutes away from Panama City. Gamboa resort is located in the heart of the rainforest and offer spectacular views and wildlife.
Number 5, Cerro Ancon
The best photo opps of Panama City, the canal, and Amador Causeway are located 654 feet above the city at Cerro Ancon. Just remember that there will be a lot of up hill walking.
