Away from the hustle bustle, one feels close to nature after visiting a beautiful place known as Naranag. Though it is one of the lesser visited places among the tourist destinations in Kashmir, but one who once visits the place will love to visit again. A distance of nearly 50 Kms from Srinagar, while on a visit to Naranag one feels spellbound to witness this wonder of nature. Naranag mesmerizes tourists with its sprawling meadows, dense forests, and a river flowing alongside the spot. Naranag is one of the best places, in fact bases for trekking and adventure tours. From this place one can walk and trek to famous Gangbal Lake.Traveling all the way to Naranag, ahead of the resort the tall trees and dense forests welcome the visitors which accompany them to the Naranag. On the way the sharp and blind curves will keep giving jerks and if driving a car you will have to keep the brakes almost always pressed as the road leading to Naranag is about 20 kms uphill drive in a zig zag shape from Preng (a village on Sgr-Leh highway). On the road to Naranag, one sees the people, mostly Gujjars, wearing traditional turbans.
On reaching the base there are remains of an ancient temple built with large granite blocks. The monument looks fascinating with huge rock blocks one resting over another. The temple complex is believed to be ancient monument dedicated to the deity Shiva. There is a stream that flows besides the monuments, fed by glaciers and the Gangbal Lake situated high up in the mountains. The beauty of Naranag lies in the fact that it is desolate, except for the luxuries of nature. As you ascend, there is tranquility and even the murmur of stream vanishes at many places. The trek from Sonamarg to Gangbal, culminating at Naranag is very popular. There are innumerable places which are not any less in beauty. Clear water lakes on top of the mountains reflecting perfectly all the shades of blue sky over it is simply magical.

The altitude of the peak is 5150 metres. Harmukh peak has been climbed many times and only last year it was been climbed by Jammu and Kashmir Mountaineering and Hiking Cub (JKMHC).
Gangbal is one of the important halting stations on the seven lake trek also known as the 'Great Lakes trek'. This trek, which is 65 kms long, is considered as the one the best in the entire Himalayas. The seven lakes trek involves crossing of 3 passes, each over 4000 metres high.
The trek to Gangbal starts from Naranag where the ancient temple dedicated to Lord Buteshwara is located. This ASI monument is being frequented by tourists, pilgrims and archaeologists.
Gangbal lake was stocked by Britishers with trout fish. Since then the brown trout, and rainbow trout thrives along with the native snow trout. The stream draining the Naranag valley joins river Sindh near Kangan. This stream is known as 'Kanaknaz Naala'.
How to Reach?
The Gangabal lake is approached from Srinagar 45 kilometres by road via Ganderbal up to Naranag and then a trek of 12.5 kilometres upslopes leads to the lake, which can be covered by a horse ride or by foot. The shepherds and gujjars can be seen during the trek with their flocks of sheep and goats.
