In Search Of History - Roman Roads: Paths To Empire (History Channel Documentary)
Narrated by David Ackroyd
Even today, some 2,000 years after they were built, the roads of the Roman Empire remain one of the most astonishing accomplishments in the history of mankind. Built on the backs of many and often awash in the blood of conquest and suppression, they were absolutely vital to the process of building a society the likes of which the world had never seen.
ROMAN ROADS: PATHS TO EMPIRE journeys back to the age of Caesar to tell the story of these remarkable highways that helped forge an empire. Discover how they were built, and why so many have lasted to this day. Historians detail their central role in the expansion and maintenance of the Empire.
See how they grew from a local network to a vast web stretching across three continents and embracing 50,000 miles. And visit sites throughout the world where these ancient arteries remain, sometimes still in use! Walk in the steps of emperors and explore one of the most fascinating artifacts in the history of humanity.

In Memoriam Fredy Häner
Fredy Häner - my great friend
I met Fredy in the late 80s in Harvey's Pub, Saanen (Gstaad). I was playing there during the winter season and Fredy showed up one night with some friends, some of you are here today, came up to the stage, told me he played blues harp & asked if he could join me for a couple of songs. He was great and for the next few years he would show up at different gigs & get up & play.
In the spring of 1991, when I was on holiday visiting my father in Perth, Australia, I got a call from Fredy on my Dad's phone. I did not know him very well at that time & have no idea how he found out where I was or got the number. Anyway he called to ask me if I could come & play for his friend Martin's wedding later that year.
At that time in London I was playing with singer/guitarist Charlie Maxwell and we decided that we would both come if we could make a small tour out of it. Fredy organized a few concerts, we stayed at his place & that was really the start of our close friendship.
Charlie & I made a second tour later that year including playing for Fredy's 40th birthday party at his home. Soon after that I made my first tour with Derek Mandel & Fredy organized many concerts for us over the years to come. In 1993 when the apartment downstairs became available, Fredy asked me if I would like to rent it & that's how I came to live in Switzerland.
When Fredy turned 50 he asked me to organize a band for his birthday party but it was too late for my usual musicians who were all busy. So I phoned around & threw together a band including Patent Ochsner's Carlo Brenni on saxophone, bassist Süggu Ramseier from Jimmy Hofer and ex-Barbara Dickson drummer Jeff Seopardi - a jam with no rehearsal but great fun.
For Fredy's 60th birthday party last year as most of you know, Aschi & I joined him on stage with Lorenzo, Willy and Peter in the Freewheelin Blues Band.
As well as being one of my closest and truest friends for more than 20 years, Fredy has played a part in many of my musical projects including Noel & Mandel with Derek Mandel, Flat Broke with Johnny Baker, The FunBand with Cheesy Preisig & Aschi Beyeler, and in 2000 the band Jacks making a guest appearance on the CD It is what it is. He also played onstage with Aschi & myself on the first Swiss Rock & Blues Cruise in 2006.
Back in August of '94, TV came to Nunningen & Fredy & I played a song live on the show. It is a song from the CD Back to the Mountains which we wrote and recorded together with Del Mandel.
Thank you very much Fredy
