Beautiful places in the world : Greece Methoni Kástro and Bourtzi Aerial Video
Fot: Dariusz Klaper filmed with Phantom 2 drone all rights reserved
Methoni (Greek: Μεθώνη, Italian: Modone) is a village and a former municipality in Messenia, Peloponnese, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Pylos-Nestoras, of which it is a municipal unit.[2] Its name may be derived from Mothona, a mythical rock. It is located 11 km south of Pylos and 11 km west of Foinikounta. The municipal unit of Methoni includes the nearby villages of Grizokampos, Finikouda, Foiniki, Lachanada, Varakes, Kainourgio Chorio, Kamaria, Evangelismos and the Oinnoussai Islands. The latter constitutes from Sapientza, Schiza and Santa Marina and forms a natural protection to Methoni harbour. The town is also known by the Italian name Modone, as it was called by the Venetians.
Its economy is dominated by tourism, attracted by its beaches (including Tapia, Kokkinia and Kritika) and its historical castle.
Kástro - twierdza, stanowiąca największą atrakcję Methoni, należy do najlepiej zachowanych średniowiecznych zabytków Europy.
Peloponnese, Greece | A Journey to the Mythical South HD
Timeless scenic villages, ancient monuments, mediaeval castles, rich history, natural beauty and spectacular beaches make the Peloponnese a year-round holiday destination.
The Peloponnese is a destination for all seasons, with a rich history and a rich landscape. Destinations of authentic natural beauty, each with their own distinctive characteristics, eager to welcome you all year long; Messinia, Elafonisos, Monemvasia, Mani, Porto Heli, Kalavryta and Nafplio. It’s the land of ancient Sparta, home of the holy olive grove and the birthplace of the Olympic Games. War, peace and culture saturate the cities and countryside of one of the most beautiful destinations of mainland Greece, the Peloponnese. Here, ancient monuments and impressive attractions are scattered throughout the landscape.
You’ll visit the ancient theatre of Epidaurus, and next to it the Asclepius (a Unesco World Heritage Site). The Peloponnese is a celebration of contrasts; majestic mountains embraced by a dramatic, golden coastline of endless beaches and exotic coves. Pure, unspoilt landscapes, technicolour water and fertile valleys are all just a short car-ride away. Road-trippers and landlubbers never tire of its winding roads that disappear into the horizon, where sea and sky become one. Its villages, both seaside and alpine, will enchant you with their age-old traditions and exceptional food. You’ll be transported to another time wandering through ancient monuments and resplendent mediaeval Venetian and Byzantine castles. Then rest-up for the big days ahead at traditional guest villas in stone-built hamlets and modern luxurious resorts, with their 5-star service and modern day amenities.
A gilded coastline: exotic beaches and picture-perfect bays
The coastline of the Peloponnese hides spectacular sandy beaches with crystal-clear water. Award-worthy are exotic Elafonisos and Voidokoilia in Messinia. Other notable beaches are those in the Gulf of Messinia, Kardamyli, as well as Old Epidaurus and Porto Heli.
A journey through history and ancient civilisations
In the Peloponnese you’ll experience the grandeur of Ancient Greece. You’ll stand awestruck in Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, tour Homer’s ‘gold-rich Mycenae’. You’ll catch a sensational performance at the famous ancient theatre of Epidaurus and visit the Asclepius. You’ll discover the temple of Apollo Epikourios at Basses (Bassae), created by the same architect that built the Parthenon, and marvel at Iktinos, another Unesco World Heritage Site. The Peloponnese is a living lesson in mediaeval and Byzantine architecture, particularly the well-preserved castle of Mystra in Sparta and the castles in Methoni and Pylos.
Peloponnese: paradise for activities in nature
The Peloponnese is a paradise for thrill seekers and adventure lovers. There are numerous opportunities for off-roading, driving, hiking and rock climbing in the Taygetos Mountains. The European long-distance hiking trail, E4, passes through here, and there are dozens of other signposted paths in every area. The more courageous will want to head to Lagada that has a rock climbing park.
Pylos (Navarino) - Greece HD Travel Channel
On our the way to Pylos, in Italian called Navarino, we came across the bay of Navarino and Pylos. Today, bathers and camping tourists bustle about at the place where two major battles had taken place. On our the way to Pylos, in Italian called Navarino, we came across the bay of Navarino and Pylos. Today, bathers and camping tourists bustle about at the place where two major battles had taken place.
425 BC after a battle in favor of the Athenians in the Peloponnesian War, the Athenians beat the Spartan troops on land.
Famous is the naval battle of Navarino in the Greek War of Independence in 1827. In the last naval battle in history, who was beaten with sailing ships; the Ottoman fleet, combined with fleet parts of Egypt, was destroyed by the Allies (United Kingdom, France and Russia). This led to the independence of Greece.
Among other things, the bronze statue of the Bavaria in Munich was later poured from the cannons of the sunken Ottoman fleet.
As the bay is accessible from the sea, only by two narrow passages, it forms a perfect protected natural harbor. Two forts testify that it has always been a popular strategic goal. The older one at the northern entrance is left as a ruin. The newer, at the southern end of the bay in modern Pylos, is more remarkable. It was established under Venetian rule, in the course of history it changed hands between Venetians and Ottomans.
