Ginosar is a kibbutz in the Plain of Ginosar on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee in Israel. Located north of Tiberias on Highway 90, it falls under the jurisdiction of Emek HaYarden Regional Council. In 2017 it had a population of 592.

The Ancient Galilee Boat, also known as the Jesus Boat, is an ancient fishing boat from the 1st century AD, discovered in 1986 on the north-west shore of the Sea of Galilee in Israel. The remains of the boat, 27 feet long, 7.5 feet wide and with a maximum preserved height of 4.3 feet , first appeared during a drought, when the waters of the Sea receded. There is no evidence connecting the boat to Jesus or his disciples.

Capernaum was a fishing village established during the time of the Hasmoneans, located on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee. It had a population of about 1,500. Archaeological excavations have revealed two ancient synagogues built one over the other. A house turned into a church by the Byzantines is said to be the home of Saint Peter. The village was inhabited continuously from the 2nd century BC to the 11th century AD, when it was abandoned sometime before the Crusader conquest. This includes the re-establishment of the village during the Early Islamic period soon after the 749 earthquake.

Boat Ride on the Sea of Galilee

Near the Kibbutz of Nof Ginosar and the Yigal Allon Centre is an artistic walkway with artwork chiseled in the stones dedicated to the spirit of peace that was promoted by Yigal Allon. It is down this walkway that we got on a boat on the Sea of Galilee to hear about the history that was all around us and to have some fun, dancing to Hava Nagila.

The Golan Heights and the Peace Vista

The Golan Heights overlooks a rich agricultural area, the Hula (Huleh) Valley and the Sea of Galilee (Lake Tiberias)* in the West, with the Dead Sea to the South. You can see mountains are flat, but the only one with a round shape is Mount Tabor. There are a few kibbutzim around the lake. Kibbutz Ginosar is across the lake as well as the city of Tiberias. This Peace Vista, as it is now named, was a Syrian Bunker and it had complete control over the kibbutz below. Imagine what it was like to live in the valley below with snipers up above and to try to till the land. Children slept at night in bunkers for safety. It was during the Six-Day War (June 5-10, 1967) that Israel took control of the plateau of the Golan Heights. Israel has occupied and administered this area of the Golan Heights since 1967. When we were there, it was a windy day on the Golan Heights and our video camera captured the sound of the wind instead of our guide’s narration. There is an audio box at the site and we were able to record that narration for this video. *These are other names used for the Sea of Galilee: Kinneret, Lake Gennesaret, and Lake Tiberias. It is about 13 miles long and 8 miles wide. The Jordan River flows through it from North to South.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.

Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.

In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)

Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.
