Friends of the Viking Chicago Welcome Viking Ship Draken Harald Hårfagr
“Friends of the Viking” Chicago Welcome Viking Ship Draken Harald Hårfagre After traveling to the Great Lakes from Norway, the crew found out last week they were required by law to have a pricey navigational pilot on board. Captain of world's largest Viking ship explains pilotage fees
In mid-July 2016 doubts were raised about the ship's ability to visit US destinations in the Great Lakes. The U.S. Coast Guard deemed it a commercial vessel, requiring a pilot per a 1960 law. The total cost of piloting was estimated at $400,000. Sons of Norway raised over $60,000 in order to help pay some of the $140,000 pilot fees. On 4th August 2016 the Draken Harald Hårfagre issued a press release declaring that Green Bay or Chicago had to be the ship's last stop in the Great Lakes, planning to make its next stop in New York in September.
Captain Bjőrn Ahlander wrote,“We have been informed that the pilot associations have been receiving threats and being harassed by angry individuals,” wrote the Draken Harald Hårfagre in an open letter signed by Captain Bjőrn Ahlander and 17 crew members, published on the expedition’s website. “I hope we can come together and take an approach to this that is with kindness, honesty, and integrity. We respect pilots and their profession. The safety of the Great Lakes, and well-being of all living near these beautiful bodies of water, rely on their tireless skills in navigating these huge ships through difficult waterways in all conditions.” The crew says they welcome the pilots on board the Draken, but also say they “prefer they not have to take valuable time out of their already overly busy schedules for our relatively tiny Viking ship.”
The pilotage fees, required by United States Coast Guard, will add up, explains the crew, because the journey across the Great Lakes will cover “several thousand nautical miles,” take “many months,” and because the ship must travel by sail much of the time. Sons of Norway, the Draken’s official fundraising partner, has raised more than $70,000 but it is “at the absolute skimming by the skin of our teeth,” says the crew, still about $100,000 short of the estimated cost to travel beyond Chicago, and well below the $430,000 estimated cost to complete the entire trip.
The US Coast Guard and the pilot companies are continuing to claim pilotage fees and confusion that they were misinformed prior to setting sail from Norway April 26th as the reason Draken Harald Hårfagre has to skip Duluth. The US pilotage regulations base their requirements on whether a foreign flag vessel is conducting commercial activity on the Great Lakes, such as collecting fees to attend events and providing tours for paying passengers, much like cruise ships. The Draken Harald Harfagre had to be certified as an oceangoing commercial cargo vessel with the Norwegian Maritime Authorities.

This video was recorded in Denali National Park and Preserve. Denali National Park and Preserve is located in Interior Alaska, centered on Mount Denali, the highest mountain in North America. The park and contiguous preserve encompasses more than 6 million acres (24,500 km2). The national preserve is 1,334,200 acres (5,430 km2). On December 2, 1980, a 2,146,580 acre (8,687 km2) Denali Wilderness was established within the park. Denali's landscape is a mix of forest at the lowest elevations, including deciduous taiga. The preserve is also home to tundra at middle elevations, and glaciers, rock, and snow at the highest elevations. The longest glacier is the Kahiltna Glacier. The park received 587,412 recreational visitors in 2016. Wintertime activities includes dog-sledding, cross-country skiing, and snowmachining.

WHAT IS POLAR VORTEX FREEZING UNITED STATES 2014
WHAT IS A POLAR VORTEX ARCTIC CYCLONE NASA
presented by Bill Keefer BILL KEEFER, VOICE OVER, VOICE OVERS, AUDIO, BOOKS, SOOTHING VOICE, ADVERTISING, YOUTUBE, VIDEOS,
The weather phenomenon hogging all the attention now is polar vortex.
Twenty-six states are under wind-chill warnings or watches, and the polar vortex is to blame, breaking loose from its North Pole confines and plunging the country in a deep, dangerous freeze.
Think of this as a polar hurricane, said NBC News' Al Roker.
It isn't expected to linger for long but will leave a mark. Here's what you need to know:
So what exactly is a polar vortex?
A polar vortex is basically a great swirling pool of extremely cold air located tens of thousands of feet in the atmosphere, SAYS A senior meteorologist with The Weather Channel.
Basically an arctic cyclone, it ordinarily spins counterclockwise around the north and south poles.
While it tends to dip over northeastern Canada, it's catching everyone's attention because it has moved southward over such a large population — as many as 140 million Americans are feeling the freeze.
Why has it traveled so far south?
There's a variety of reasons why a chunk of cold air over Canada would break off our way.
Chiefly, warmer air builds up over areas such as Greenland or Alaska, and that air forces the colder, denser air southward.
Also, weather patterns can create the right conditions for the polar vortex to point south.
But in this case, this very well just may be one of those anomalies where it forces itself southward,
GLOBAL WARMING IS THE MELTING GREENLAND GLACIERS, THIS WARM AIR FORCES THE ARCTIC POLAR VORTEX ACROSS THE LAND MASS OF THE MAIN UNITED STATES.
Is this a rare phenomenon?
Yes, and no.
Through the course of a winter, the arctic air can get displaced southward, typically into the eastern U.S. But it is uncommon for such cold air to cover such a large part of the country, happening maybe once a decade or longer.
Amplifying this polar vortex are the extreme cold and brutal winds — sending places such as Fargo, N.D., at 32 below zero and Madison, Wis., at minus 21. Add the wind chill, and it will feel like minus 50s and 60s in some parts.
