30 Unique Things That Only Happen in Saudi Arabia
Did you ever think you could serve jail time for a selfie? Well, there’s no country quite like Saudi Arabia, and while it definitely has a colorful culture, some of its traditions and rules are fascinating…. And some are just plain weird!
For example, birth control is often accessible only for married women. Some pharmacies can ask for a marriage certificate before selling contraceptives! If you're a Saudi man, giving flowers to your sweetheart is also not a good idea. Here, women can only receive flowers from other women. And there are no cinemas in Saudi Arabia. The government believes that movies may give men and women inappropriate ideas. Can you imagine that?

SUMMARY:
- Saudi Arabia is located on the Arabian Peninsula. Just so you know, this is the world’s largest peninsula. And even though Saudi Arabia is the 13th largest country in the world, it still has no river! Considering the fact that it’s mostly deserts, this is a real bummer for everybody.
- Despite its desert climate, snow, rain, and hail are never out of the picture. Especially, if you live in areas like Tabuk.
- Also, don’t be surprised if you see a Saudi family enjoying their meals on the floor.
- Saudi people take naming their child pretty seriously. They usually choose names that somehow reflect their kid’s heritage, the clan they’re from, or their extended family.
- Not that long ago, the women of Saudi Arabia weren’t allowed to drive cars or even ride bicycles. However, they could easily fly planes if they wanted to. Seems logical! Thankfully, in 2018, this ban was lifted.
- Universities are also packed with women. According to statistics, about 52 percent of students pursuing a bachelor’s degree are, in fact, women.
- Valentine’s Day in Saudi Arabia also comes with a set of rules. Flower shops can’t sell red roses, gift shops avoid selling heart-shaped products, and girls are prohibited from wearing red to school. And if you're a Saudi man, giving flowers to your sweetheart is also not a good idea. Here, women can only receive flowers from other women.
- Saudi wedding ceremonies are also not as fun as you might think. Believe it or not, they’re often held separately for the bride and the groom! The newlyweds get together only near the end of it.
- Music classes are also kinda banned in public schools. Sure, the Saudi music industry is pretty dynamic, but all Saudi musicians either taught themselves how to play instruments or had to hire a tutor.
- If you live in Saudi Arabia, you should also forget about crazy birthday parties. Public gatherings of any kind are completely prohibited, so your best option is having a piece of cake at home in your favorite pajamas.
- When the rest of the world obsesses over oil, Saudi people know what’s good. Here, fresh water is way more expensive and valuable. However, that’s probably because all the oil in Saudi Arabia can easily fill more than 4.7 million Olympic-size swimming pools!

Things To Do in Toronto When A Hail Storm Hits
We headed into Toronto, Canada with a plan of what we wanted to do and see. Unfortunately, our visit to Toronto that day had us running into all sorts of obstacles and minor fails. From a hail storm to early closing hours, we managed to stumble our way between all the things to do in Toronto. We didn't have a chance to see the Hockey Hall Of Fame or head on the Toronto Tall Ship Cruise that we planned on taking but we adapted to the changes and ended up going to the St Lawrence Market, The Burger's Priest and even got a chance to take a ride using the Toronto Bike Share program through the puddles of the unexpected storm.
Though not what was expected, what we managed to accomplish was discovering the bike sharing program in the city, learning how to use it and biking Toronto and the puddle-filled streets!
This took us to The Burger's Priest where we were finally able to try these popular burgers and give our own food review!

How to Pick a Great Airline Seat
Watch more Flying Tips videos:
Don't get stuck in a middle seat near a bathroom on your next flight. With a little time and effort, you can be sitting pretty.
Step 1: Figure out your priorities
There is no single best seat on an airplane — all have their pros and cons — so decide what's important to you. Legroom? Peace and quiet? A quick exit? A smooth ride?
Step 2: Check out seats
Don't assume anything about a seat without checking it out. Some bulkhead seats don't offer extra legroom, some window seats are between windows and therefore offer little view, and many exit seats, while providing more legroom, are narrower than other seats.
Tip
Find out what kind of plane you'll be on and then visit seatexpert.com: or seatguru.com: Click on any seat to see its pros and cons.
Step 3: Buy a better seat
Pay a small fee to ensure you get a seat with the most legroom. Many airlines now identify their best seats on their websites and charge for them accordingly.
Step 4: Don't forget about reclining
Take reclining into account. If you like to sit back, avoid the last rows in any section. If you hate people leaning into your lap, try to snare an exit seat; the seats in front of those rows usually don't recline.
Tip
Exit row seats are often not assigned until check-in. To snag one, get to the airport early.
Step 5: Consider the pitch
Consider the pitch of the seat, which is the distance between your seat and the one in front of you. You'll find this information on airline seat websites.
Step 6: Take turbulence into account
Take turbulence into account. If you're a white-knuckle flyer, sit over the front of the wing; that's where you're least likely to feel turbulence. Avoid the back, where you'll feel every bump.
Step 7: Consider the noise
If you need peace and quiet, avoid sitting in the back, where the engines are the loudest. And steer clear of the bulkhead, where families with babies are usually seated.
Step 8: Book early
When you buy your ticket, be sure to book your specific seat, either online or by calling the airline directly.
Tip
Increase your odds of sitting beside an empty middle seat by requesting a back row where either the aisle or window seat is already booked. The middle seats in back rows fill up last.
Step 9: Check back the day before
Check back 24 hours before your flight; this is when prime seating often is released. Plus, airlines occasionally switch planes, possibly turning your chosen seat into an undesirable one!
Step 10: Join a good-seat program
If you're a frequent flyer, consider joining an airline program that guarantees a good seat for an annual fee.
Did You Know?
The average airline seat in coach is just 17.2 inches wide.
Travel Saudi Arabia - Touring the Archaeological Site of Madain Saleh
Take a tour of Archaeological Site of Madain Saleh in Saudi Arabia -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Mada'in Saleh is a pre-Islamic archaeological site, and the first UNESCO World Heritage site in Saudi Arabia.
The site is a major part of the Nabataean kingdom, a civilization that existed around the 1st century.
The area is a collection of monuments and tombs to people pertaining to various social classes.
It is located at a great intersection of trade in Saudi Arabia, and thus many languages, writings and artistic styles are present at the site.
Due in part to the arid environment and no resettlement, the ruins at Madain Saleh are incredibly well-kept and preserved.
However, Madain Saleh has not become a great tourist destination because of the belief that it was cursed by Allah.
The rock-cut entrances, tombs and engravings are impressive enough to one day overcome the site's reputation.

Anti-tourism sentiment grows in overcrowded Venice
The ancient city of Venice is sinking, but its also shrinking.
Its 54,000 citizens are steadily leaving, complaining the city has been overrun by tourists.
But fed-up locals are hoping to change that with an anti-tourist campaign.
Al Jazeera's Charlie Angela reports from Venice.
