Aarau, the capital of the Canton of Aargau, is located on the River Aare to which the town and canton owe their name.
Aarau is located by the southern foot of the Jura foothills in the centre of the big city triangle of Zurich, Basel and Lucerne. The central location was recognised early on which is why Aarau for a brief few months in 1798 was Switzerland's first capital and home to Switzerland's first Houses of Parliament.
The charming old town boasts the most beautiful eaves, the so-called «Dachhimmel» which predominantly date from the 16th century when the town underwent considerable extension, are a special feature of the old town of Aarau. It's for this reason that Aarau is regarded as the town of beautiful gables.
Aarau continues to display an appreciation of art: the Aargau Art Museum featuring an extension designed by the famous architects Herzog & de Meuron offers architecture and art exhibitions setting high standards. The «Naturama», Aargau nature museum, is not your run-of-the-mill museum: animals, plants, exciting video films highlight the interaction and areas of conflict between nature and man in Aargau.
The Roggenhausen Wildlife Park has wild animals in their natural habitat as well as a Nature Trail. Cycling and walking trails alongside the River Aare and the Jura slopes provide the perfect opportunity for some pleasant physical exercise. But to see the people of Aargau really enjoying themselves you need to come to one of the local and historic traditional events, such as the «Maienzug» in July, the «Bachfischet» or «Rüeblimärt».
The Canton of Aargau boasts a great many castles, including some of Switzerland's most impressive such as the Lenzburg, the Hallwyl Water Castle and the Habsburg Castle - main residence of the famous dynasty from the the 10th century onwards. And Brugg, Baden and Zurich are a very short journey away. The Vindonissa Museum offers an opportunity to discover traces of the Romans and Windish is home to the biggest and best-preserved amphitheatre in Switzerland. And there are also a lot of historic towns, such as Bremgarten, Zofingen and others, to visit in the Canton of Aargau.

The cantons are governed at the federal level, but also have their own constitutions, parliament, government, and courts.
Another interesting thing about Zurich is that only two thirds of its residents are actually Swiss citizens. Germans and Italians make up the next largest population groups, which is part of the reason why the city, as almost all Switzerland speaks four languages: German, Italian, English, and French

TRIP TO AUSTRIA !!!
Join me for a trip to Austria! Located in Central Europe, Austria is a federal republic and a landlocked country of over 8.7 million people. Its terrain is very mountainous as it lies within the Alps. The majority of the population speaks German.
Our first stop was in Vienna. Vienna is the capital and largest city of Austria and is its cultural, economic, and political centre. While in Vienna, we visited The Belvedere, a historic building complex that consists of two Baroque palaces (the Upper and Lower Belvedere), the Orangery, and the Palace Stables. It houses the Belvedere museum. The grounds are set on a gentle gradient and include decorative tiered fountains and cascades, Baroque sculptures, and majestic wrought iron gates. The Belvedere museum houses the greatest collection of Austrian art dating from the Middle Ages to the present day, complemented by the works of international artists.
Our next stop was at the Schönbrunn Palace, a former imperial summer residence of the Habsburg monarchs and is located in Vienna. The 1,441-room Baroque palace is one of the most important architectural, cultural, and historical monuments in the country. It was built roughly 300 years ago.
We then drove to the city of Salzburg, known for its salt mines. Salzburg is the fourth-largest city in Austria. The “Old Town” is internationally renowned for its baroque architecture and is one of the best-preserved city centers north of the Alps. It was the birthplace of 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In the mid‑20th century, the city was the setting for the musical film The Sound of Music. We also visited the old Hallein Salt Mine, an underground salt mine that has been worked for over 7000 years. We toured the mine and rode down on wood shafts just like the miners did centuries ago.
We then visited Mirabell Palace, a historical building in the city of Salzburg. The palace with its gardens is a listed cultural heritage monument. We were able to enjoy a Vivaldi and Mozart concert in The Marble Hall of the Palace. In its glory days, the Mozart family performed here for Salzburg´s royalty.
The highest point in Austria is The Grossglockner mountain, which stands 3798 metres high and is the highest mountain in the Alps east of the Brenner Pass. We enjoyed a scenic car ride on the High Alpine Road. It’s one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country and receives 270 000 vehicles every year.

First stop on our 10 places to visit is the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Even if you not really into horses you'll be amazed at how the riders get their mounts to perform. While in Vienna you must visit the Schönbrunn - Austria's most popular tourist attraction. This massive baroque palace was originally built as a summer residence for the imperial family of the Habsburgs, but is now a museum that also features a park and a zoo.
Austria has produced some of the best ever classical composers, and in 2006 the city of Vienna celebrated the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of its most famous residents - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. You can still visit some of the places he frequented in the city, as well as similar for a whole host of dead composers who chose to reside in Vienna such as Beethoven, Haydn and Schubert. Getting to Vienna, the city that claims to be the capital of classical music, is now even easier thanks to the abundance of cheap flights to Austria. Once there try another bit of Viennese culture, the somewhat quirky KunstHausWien, created by noted Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser and built in 1991. The architecture is distinctly different with uneven floors and odd-shaped rooms with the interior and exterior all in garish and bright colours. You can even get married there for a wedding that no one will forget in a hurry.
Next up, not just one place but a whole selection - the Sound of Music locations in and around Salzburg - the city known as the Rome of the North, to which you can also buy cheap flights. If you do visit Salzburg you must see the Eisriesenwelt Caves; the world's largest ice caves which are found just south of the city and are a truly awe-inspiring sight.
Austria with its beautiful mountainous scenery is rightly renowned for its skiing. Innsbruck, which has hosted two Winter Olympics, continues to be extremely popular and is well worth a visit even in the summer months. Here you will find the amazing Swarovski Crystal Walk Visitor Centre where you can marvel at the stunning crystal on display. For the more adventurous, jump on the aerial gondola ride up to the two-mile high Stubai glacier also just outside Innsbruck; it's so high that while riding the gondola you will be rubbing shoulders with skiers, even in summer!
For the last in our ten places to visit you'll have to get on the road. Either get on a bus or get behind the wheel yourself and steer your car up the Grossglockner Alpine Road. Since 1935 an estimated 50 million visitors have taken in the spectacular views on this most famous of Alpine roads, which leads to the 3,798 Grossglockner Mountain; home to the largest glacier in Austria.
