Thessaloniki, Greece - Travel Around The World | Top best places to visit in Thessaloniki
Top best places to visit in Thessaloniki, Greece
Thessaloniki is the second-largest city in Greece and the capital of the region of Central Macedonia.
Thessaloniki has been dubbed as The Co-Capital, a reference to its historical status as the co-reigning city of the Byzantine Empire.
Aristotelous Square is the biggest plaza and the most central point of the city and it is located on the city’s waterfront.
Picturesque promenade is spanning for about 4.5 km and, during summer, is full of Thessalonians enjoying a lively atmosphere.
From the Aristotelous Square starts the main pedestrian mall of the city, the Aristotelous Street.
It leads to ancient Roman-era ruins, which there are many in the city. The most important are:
The Roman Forum.
The Rotunda of Galerius, the oldest church of the city and one of the oldest Christian churches in the world.
The Arch of Galerius, a monumental structure built to celebrate the victory over Persians.
The Palace of Galerius, one of the most impressive constructions and the heart of the roman city.
And the city’s most famous landmark, the White Tower, nowadays a history museum.
From the top of the tower is a nice 360-degree view of the city.
Visitors in Thessaloniki have the opportunity to admire a unique architecture and well-preserved Byzantine temples, such as:
The Hagia Sophia Cathedral, the largest basilica in the city.
The Metropolitan Orthodox Church, one of the most beautiful churches consecrated to St Gregory Palamas.
And the Church of St Demetrius, the main sanctuary dedicated to the patron saint of Thessaloniki.
There are numerous other fascinating spots around town worth a visit, like:
The OTE Tower, a 76-meter-tall construction.
Located next to it the Museum of Contemporary Art.
The Archaeological Museum, that holds artifacts from prehistoric times to late antiquity.
The National Theatre, a great acting school and a dance playhouse.
And the Royal Theater, that always shows excellent dramas.
But maybe the most interesting place is the Ano Poli, the former Ottoman quarter located north of the city center.
Literally called the Upper Town houses sites which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, such as:
The Church of Hosios David.
The Vlatades Monastery, the only active priory, out of 20, in this quarter.
And the City Walls, the remains of fortifications surrounding the city from the early Byzantine period until the late 19th century.
But most people come here just for wonderful views of the city.

The peninsula is notable for its olive oil and olive production. Also various types of wine are produced.
Tourism[edit]
Chalkidiki has been a popular summer tourist destination since the late 1950s when people from Thessaloniki started spending their summer holidays in the coastal villages. In the beginning tourists rented rooms in the houses of locals. By the 1960s, tourists from Austria and Germany started to visit Chalkidiki more frequently. Since the start of the big tourist boom in the 1970s, the whole region has been captured by tourism.[7] In the region there is a golf course and there is a plan for other four in the future.
Mining[edit]
Gold was mined in the region during antiquity by Philip II of Macedon and the next rulers. Since 2013, a revival of mining for gold and other minerals was underway with a number of concessions having been granted to Eldorado Gold of Canada. However, critics claim that mining would adversely affect tourism and the environment.[8]
Administration[edit]
The regional unit Chalkidiki is subdivided into five municipalities. These are (number as in the map in the infobox):[9]
Aristotelis (2)
Kassandra (4)
Nea Propontida (3)
Polygyros (1)
Sithonia (5)
Prefecture[edit]
As a part of the 2011 Kallikratis government reform, the regional unit Chalkidiki was created out of the former prefecture Chalkidiki (Greek: Νομός Χαλκιδικής). The prefecture had the same territory as the present regional unit. At the same time, the municipalities were reorganised, according to the table below.[9]

Camping is an outdoor activity involving overnight stays away from home in a shelter, such as a tent or a caravan.Generally participants leave developed areas to spend time outdoors in nature in pursuit of activities providing them enjoyment. Camping can be enjoyed through all four seasons.
Modern campers frequent natural parks, beaches, wilderness areas, and commercial campgrounds. Camping is a key part of many youth organizations around the world, such as Scouting, which use it to teach both self-reliance and teamwork.
All beaches, seas, mountains, forests, rivers, of this world belong to all of us the mankind. The goal is to teach each other the Love, the Respect and Protection of Nature. For freely travelling with our favorite people, our best friends and our lovers, protecting and cleaning the forests and beaches, enjoying life sometimes without clothing…
GUIDE for free and responsible Camping:
How do we coexist harmoniously with other campers, local residents and nature itself? It is important for campers to learn living together by following, at least, some common rules and habits: We park our cars & bikes away from the beach and we do not obstruct the access to public. We use bags for rubbish, including tissues as animals dig them out. We gather all our rubbish and any extra we find. Wear a plastic bag in your hand in order to make the process less uncomfortable. Determine where the “toilet” is and dig holes at least 30 cm each time or cover them with sand or soil. Instead of toilet paper we use water from the sea in a plastic bottle. We avoid the use of any shampoo and soap, in the water because they pollute the sea, lake or river. We are ready to understand the specific circumstances of the place where we are and to protect it with our presence. We respect the flora and fauna of the region according to the natural conditions. For example, in areas where the sea turtles lay their eggs, the fire can disorient them and their new born, or in areas of dense vegetation fire is very dangerous and forbidden. We have the tent several meters from the waves so we do not obstruct the other campers but mainly not to disturb crabs, turtles, birds. The insects are the residents of the area, we are the guests. We avoid insects with natural repellents, and by keeping the tent zipped closed all day. We do not consider the spot we are staying in as our property, we do not create conditions for permanent settlement. We offer, share, meet each other and create, to the desired extent, conditions of collective living with the other campers. Leave the forest or the beach as found, and if possible, much better.
