Drammen - Norway
Drammen - The Capital of Buskerud County Drammen – The City by the River
Drammen is situated at the mouth of the long and scenic Drammen river valley. The river is well known for salmon anglers, but also for being cleaned and included into the city centre with its park and leisure areas along the banks on both sides.
The Spiral tunnel
Spiralen made Drammen famous in 1961, and still is a well known reference to the city: a tunnel winding six times in an upward spiral inside the mountain leading up to a look out point with a magnificent view over the city, the fjord, the river and the surrounding mountains.
Almost 200 years old
Drammen has been a city for less than two centuries, but rock carvings and other relics of the past prove that there have been people in the area for about 6000 years. The city of Drammen was established in 1811 when the towns Bragernes on the north side of the river, and Strømsø and Tangen on the south side were united. Drammen, with its 57 000 inhabitants, is the tenth largest city in Norway.
The river has always been important
The river has played an important part throughout the history of Drammen and has also given the city its name. Drafn, meaning muddy water, was the original name of the river, as the strong currents whirled up and brought with them sand and gravel. For many years there were lots of sawmills and factories along the banks, and the river was important for the floating of timber from the forests to the mills, and also for freight of timber to the harbour for export.
Sustainable environment
After a thorough cleaning in the nineteen nineties and the development of well kept parks with pedestrian and bicycle paths, benches and beaches along the banks, the river is once again a natural part of the city. Drammen has gained national recognition for the last years' determined work with integrated spatial city-and city centre planning.
Transport, trade and industry
Transport is important for the Drammen trade and industry, and the city is a junction for road, rail and ship. Drammen Port is often used by international shipping companies. Food industry and several big and small companies within electronics and graphic industry are important sectors for employment in Drammen. Drammen is the centre for shopping for more than 100 000 people from the city and its surrounding areas including neighbouring municipalities
Towards an environment for higher education and research
The process of gathering various institutions for higher education which includes combined specialists' and public library in one centre has started. Drammen Campus, Library and Business Incubator (Papirbredden) will be the engine in the further process of developing and maintaining a sustainable environment for education and research in Drammen. The Campus will significantly contribute to Drammen's assets as the regional capital and be an engine for growth and development throughout the region.
Arenas for collaboration
Drammen plays an active part in regional collaboration arenas such as Rådet for Drammensregionen (The Council of the Drammen Region), Vestregionen (the municipalities west of Oslo), and the Oslo Region.)

Around lake Semsvannet, Norway April 2012
I missed the Norwegian Herpetological Association's field herping excursions in 2010 and 2011, unfortunately, but last year I was back with the gang. :-) In 2012 our destination was lake Semsvannet in Asker municipality in Akershus county west of Oslo. I have a bunch of videos to upload from this event - this first one just shows the nature and scenery around the lake. The weather was lovely so I got some good shots. :-) There will be a number of animal videos coming up over the next few days. :-)
Seems like there was something wrong with my camera when I filmed the very first snippet in this video. Please keep watching though, that flickering is only right at the beginning. :-)

Waterfall Muktagiri & Jain holly Temples by Shirishkumar Patil Amravati
Muktagiri is a Jain Pilgrimage centre, located on border of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra in India. It comes under Bhainsdehi tehsil of Betul district or Baitul district in Madhya Pradesh, India. It is 14 km away from Paratwada, Dist. Amravati, Maharashtra. Muktagiri is 7 km away from Kharpi village on Paratwada - Baitul road.
Muktagiri is also called as 'Mendhagiri'. There are 52 temples on the mountain, surrounding a beautiful waterfall. The waterfall is generally visible only when there is enough rainfall in the area. One can plan trip to Muktagiri between June to September to see the waterfall. A lot of monkeys can be seen near the 10th Temple - Bhagwan Sheetalnath temple - near which the waterfall is located. The 10th Temple is an ancient temple and is inside an ancient cave. The cave is prone to stonefall (which is generally said to happen only during night). Also, lot of honeybees are at a large distance from the cave. The 1st Temple, 10th Temple, 26th Temple and 40th Temple are the main temples. The temples close at around 11 am. Since the temples are in Satpura Mountain range and surrounded by jungle, it is better to visit the temples before 10 am. It takes around 1.25 to 1.5 hour for an average person to finish the entire upward and downward journeys and also little bit of puja in each temple. After 11am, one can not go inside the temples. One has to greet the Bhagwans from outside the door of each temple.
Since the nearby area is a jungle, one has to come down before noon or before it becomes dark. There are separate routes for upward and downward journeys. The temples are jagrut or holy and divine temples. So one should not carry out any bad acts in or around the temples.Good residential facilities are available at 4 or 5 Dharamshalas which charge around Rs. 100 per day. Inexpensive food is available at mess or Bhojanalays but one has to purchase coupons at least 1 hour in advance. It is better to carry mineral or bisleri water from Paratwada itself as there are hardly any shops at Thapoda (the place where Muktagiri temples are located as per Postal address). Every year there is a fair on the occasion of Kartik Diwali.
Market near the Khodiyar Maa temple, Bhavnagar
Khodiyar Maa is the Hindu goddess who appeared in the story of Mamaniya Gadhvi in about AD 700.
Mamaniya Gadhvi had a superb relationship with the then ruler - Maharaj Shilbhadra. The ruler's ministers envied this exceptional relationship and prepared a way to get rid of Mamaniya Gadhvi. They were not very successful at persuading the ruler, but they succeeded in persuading the ruler's wife (queen).
One day the doorkeepers did not let him go into the palace. Mamaniya asked for the reason. He was told that a childless man is not worthy of the king's presence. Mamaniya returned home and wanted to ask Lord Shiva for help. When Lord Shiva did not appear, he decided to give his life away as a final sacrifice. Just when he was about to make it, Lord Shiva appeared and took him to the Snake Kingdom - Nagaloka to see the King of Snakes - Naga-dev.
After hearing his story full of humiliation, the Nagdev's daughters decided to help too. When Mamaniya came home, with his wife he prepared, as advised by the Nagdev's daughters, eight cradles in expectation of a great event. One day eight snakes crawled into the house and Mamaniya had suddenly seven daughters and one son. One of the daughters was Khodiyar Maa. After showing many miraculous powers, people consider her to be a goddess and she has temples and shrines too. Her vehicle is the crocodile and she has many other names such as Khodal, Trishuldhari, Maavdi. Goddess is considered as a daughter of Charan (Ni Dikri). Her temples are found all over Gujarat, Rajashtan and Mumbai but main four are Matel Near Wankaner, Bhavnagar(Rajpara village), Galdhare and Tataniya. Temple at Matel is huge and sometime people see the crocodile while doing the puja for maa khodiyar. Crocodile comes from the river which is located in front of temple. Another popular temple of Mataji is at near Bhavnagar city at Rajpara village. There is lake near temple known as Tataniya Dharo and for the same reason goddess is also known as Tataniya dhara wali. Gujarati film 'Jai Khodiyar Maa' was once box office hit again with Garba CD of Hemant Chauhan with same title.
