Discover the Harz Mountains in Germany
The Harz region is a secret little gem of a destination located in the middle of Germany. It is a place of medieval romantic towns with half-timber red-framed buildings, three UNESCO World Heritage sites, plus old castles, mountains and historic mines.
Dominating it all are the Harz Mountains which rise up from the North German plain and cover an area 100km long and 30km wide, creating a stunning area of peaks, deep valleys, rich forests, lakes and streams.

Fairytale Castle in Wernigerode - A weekend in the Harzgebierge - Beautifully Vlogged
Back in February, Gary and I travelled to Germany's magical Harzgebirge for my Grandma's 80th birthday. We stayed there for three days.
This is a vlog of our last day in the Harz. In the morning we re-visited the neo-Viking Gustav Adolf Stave Church. We then drove to Wernigerode, where we explored first the medieval town and then it's fairytale castle. Truly one of the most beautiful buildings I have ever seen. Wernigerode Castle is a Schloss located in the Harz mountains above the town of Wernigerode in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The present-day building, finished in the late 19th century, is similar in style to Schloss Neuschwanstein, though its foundations are much older.
We ended the day in Goslar, where we had a hot chocolate in a German Gaststätte.

ABOUT THE HARZ
The Harz is the highest mountain range in Northern Germany and its rugged terrain extends across parts of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. The name Harz derives from the Middle High German word Hardt or Hart - which translates to mountain forest.
The Harz Mountains is the land of German fairy tales: steep-roofed houses with tiny windows and narrow, cobblestone streets, dark forests, rushing streams and stormy mountains.
The highest mountain in the Harz is the Brocken, setting for one of the most famous scenes in Goethe's Faust.
The devil takes Faust up on the Brocken on Walpurgis Night to tempt him, where he watches a wild night of revelry among the witches and other evil creatures.
According to local legend, witches gather on April 30 every year on top of the Brocken for a German version of Halloween.

In Bad Harzburg gibt es 6 Heilquellen, den Krodo-Brunnen, den Barbarossa-Brunnen, Schwefel-Brunnen. Weiterhin die Julius-Quelle, Johann-Albrecht-Quelle u. Dr. Harras-Scheineider-Quelle.
Eine wichtige Sehenswürdigkeit ist der Raudauwasserfall südlich der Stadt und der Baumwipfelpfad Harz, im kalten Tal.
Wichtige Sehenswürdigkeiten sind z.B. die Innenstadt rund um den Kurpark und die Harzburg, sowie die Seilbahn dort hin.
Über Bad Harzburg, liegt die Ruine der Harzburg, dort führt eine Seilbahn hin.
Für Touristen gibt es Wellnessangebote wie z.B. die Soletherme Bad Harzburg.
Durch seine verkehrsgünstige und zentrl. Lage ist Bad Harzburg auch als Wohnort sehr begehrt.
In Bad Harzburg gibt es auch einen Baumkronenpfad, mit Namen Baumwipfelweg Harz.
Oberhalb von Bad Harzburg liegt die Harzburg, die Ruine einer eheml. Höhenburg.
Diese kann man auch mit einer Seilbahn erreichen.

Bad Harzburg is a spa-town in central Germany, in the Goslar district of Lower Saxony. It lies on the northern edge of the Harz mountains and is a recognised saltwater spa and climatic health resort.
Bad Harzburg is situated at the northern foot of the Harz mountain range on the edge of the Harz National Park. Für meinen letzten Tag in den Harz, beschloss ich, die Selketalbahn zu besuchen. For my final day in the Harz Mountains, I decided to visit the Selketalbahn. For those who do not know the Harz railway network well, the Selketalbahn runs between Quedlinburg and Eisfelder Talmuhle. In order to get to Eisfelder Talmuhle, the trains are required to negotiate the 180 degree loop at Steige. Because of this, the trains are required to run around their train at Hasselfelde, where I go next. After arriving at Hasselfelde, 99 6001 is seen being serviced, and coupling up to the back of the train, to run in reverse to Eisfelder and therefore completing the loop.
After Hasselfelde is Eisfelder Talmuhle. After 99 6001 arrives, she once again runs around her train. Also featured is the arrival of 99 7245-6 in the background. The final shot comes from a crossing outside Eisfelder Talmuhle, where 99 6001 makes a great sound and sight as she heads north towards Steige, Alexisbad and Quedlinburg.

THE BISMARCK TOWER in Zielona Góra, Poland
(until 1945 Grünberg in Schlesien, Lower Silesia, Germany)
is one of the best-preserved Bismarck towers outside of present-day Germany. It is also called the Wilkanowska Tower, after the hill on which it stands.Despite its name, the tower is actually located in the village of Wilkanowo, Lubusz Voivodeship, 6 km southwest of Zielona Góra.
It is still in use as an observation tower and radio mast.
HISTORY:
The tower was proposed by architect Albert Severin,
with the support of the Grünberg Commercial and Horticultural Association. The club purchased a plot of land on the Meiseberg, outside the village of Wittgenau, for construction of the tower. The foundation stone was laid on 1 April 1902 (Bismarck's birthday); construction was carried out by local master mason Carl Mühle.
The tower is 20 m high and stands atop Wilkanowska Hill (formerly Meiseberg), 221 m above sea level. It is built entirely from bricks, with crenellations at the top.
The tower was completed in just four months at a cost of 6,000 marks; it was inaugurated on 23 August 1902.
Above the entrance was a relief of Otto von Bismarck, and the inscription
ERECTED IN 1902/COMMERCIAL AND HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION OF GRÜNBERG.

WIEŻA WILKANOWSKA (przed II wojną światową jako Wieża Bismarcka) --wieża widokowa z czerwonej cegły o wysokości 20 metrów, znajdująca się na szczycie Góry Wilkanowskiej (Kosowej Góry), najwyższego wzniesienia Wału Zielonogórskiego, na wysokości 221 m n.p.m.
Znajduje się poza granicami administracyjnymi miasta Zielonej Góry na terenie gminy Świdnica w pobliżu wsi Wilkanowo.
Od nazwy tej wsi po II wojnie światowej wzięła swoją nazwę wieża.
HISTORIA:
Kamień węgielny położono 1 kwietnia 1902 roku w rocznicę urodzin żelaznego kanclerza Ottona von Bismarcka.
Inicjatorem był Związek Rzemiosła i Ogrodnictwa. Projektantem był architekt miejski Albert Severin, wykonawcą mistrz murarski Carl Mühl, obaj z Zielonej Góry.
Otwarcie nastąpiło 23 sierpnia 1903 roku. Nad wejściem znajdował się niegdyś medalion z popiersiem Bismarcka.
Obecnie Wieża Wilkanowska należy do Nadleśnictwa Zielona Góra i pełni rolę wieży przeciwpożarowej i punktu obserwacyjnego. Do wieży prowadzi ścieżka edukacyjna Nadleśnictwa Zielona Góra, a pod nią znajduje się ważny zielonogórski węzeł szlaków turystycznych PTTK.
